'SNL' Fans Are Very Divided Over What Maya Rudolph Should Do This Week After Election Loss

Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris; Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton

Fans of the sketch show are remembering how 'SNL' handled Hillary Clinton's loss in 2016—and while some are calling for a similar tribute, others are warning the show not to repeat it.

Tuesday's election results have a sickening feeling of déjà vu, and with Saturday fast approaching, many are wondering how Saturday Night Live will handle the election results.

For some, the show's approach to Hillary Clinton's loss in 2016 is top of mind. That Saturday night, former castmember Kate McKinnon, who'd played Clinton throughout the election cycle, appeared in the show's cold open to play and sing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."

Many feel like Maya Rudolph, who's been playing Kamala Harris this season, should take a similarly emotional approach.

Scores of people took to X to enlist Rudolph to really lean into the chilling return of 2016's vibes and replicate McKinnon's solemn performance.

But McKinnon's 2016 performance was polarizing at the time however. Many felt it was maudlin and didn't meet the moment given the stakes of Clinton's loss.

Echoes of that controversy were all over the discourse over how SNL should handle Harris's loss as well—especially given that the stakes of her loss are orders of magnitude higher than 2016.

And that had many feeling like a repeat of McKinnon's performance was the last thing they wanted to see.

And of course, there were plenty of other joking suggestions that brought much needed levity.

And others were just bummed that we're not going to get several years of Maya Rudolph's brilliance on SNL every week.

Whatever happens, we'll always have the memories of Rudolph as Harris to help us "keep calmala and carry onala."
