Piers Morgan Storms Off Morning Show Set After Co-Host Calls Him Out For 'Trashing' Meghan Markle

Piers Morgan Storms Off Morning Show Set After Co-Host Calls Him Out For 'Trashing' Meghan Markle
Good Morning Britain

Oprah Winfrey's two-hour long interview with Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle, which played on the televisions of over 17 million people on Sunday night, certainly gave Monday morning talk shows plenty to discuss.

It's no wonder.

In their conversation, Harry and Meghan, who cut ties with the royal family just over a year ago, divulged the monarchy exhibited racist attitudes toward Markle and the couple's then-unborn son, Archie.

In addition, Markle confessed the intense pressures of joining the royal family as an outsider led her to experience depression, and even suicidal thoughts.

And yet, on Monday's installment of Good Morning Britain, host Piers Morgan offered absolutely zero sympathy to Markle and the difficulties she faced.

Rather, Morgan got into a screaming match with Black activist Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, invited disgraced NBC anchor Megyn Kelly on the show to trivialize Markle's claims, and even aroused criticism from co-host Susanna Reid.

But Morgan's dismissal of Markle was only getting started on Monday as he only escalated Tuesday.

The next day, once the dust had settled—and 24 hours worth of internet chatter had ensued—Morgan's other co-host, Alex Beresford took a moment to voice his own critique of Morgan's dismissive attitude of both Prince Harry and Duchess Markle.

Beresford began by addressing Morgan's attitude toward Prince Harry.

"I hear Piers say William has gone through the same thing, but do you know what?"
"Siblings experience tragedy in their life and one will be absolutely fine and brush it off and the other will not be able to deal with it so strongly and that is clearly what has happened with Prince Harry in this situation."
"He walked behind his mother's coffin at a tender, tender age in front of the globe. That is going to shape a young boy for the rest of his life. So I think that we all need to take a step back."

Then Beresford moved on to the more recent treatment of Duchess Markle.

"I understand that you don't like Meghan Markle. You've made that so clear a number of times on this program. A number of times."
"And I understand that you've got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle or had one and she cut you off. She's entitled to cut you off if she wants to."
"Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don't think she has, but yet you continue to trash her."

It was then that Morgan got out of his chair and stormed off towards the door.

When Morgan stormed off, Beresford couldn't believe his behavior.

"This is absolutely diabolical behavior."
"I'm sorry, but Piers spouts off on a regular basis and we all have to sit there and listen―6:30 to 7 o'clock yesterday was incredibly hard to watch, incredibly hard to watch."

People who witnessed the moment found it as instructive as it was satisfying.

After a commercial break, Morgan returned to the desk to voice his response to Beresford's criticism, Huffington Post reported.

"You launching into a pretty personally derogatory monologue on one of your colleagues isn't probably one of the best ways to go about it."
"As much as I'd like to sit here taking abuse from you for hours on end, that's not going to happen."

But Beresford offered a lengthy, thoughtful response in return:

"I'm not trying to come on this show and take you down, tear you apart. Just because we're on the same side, doesn't mean we have to have the same view."
"This whole situation is very personal for me and I'm by no way, shape or form accusing you of being a racist."
"I have the luxury of knowing you on and off-screen and we've had conversations, I know where you stand on this and I have a great amount of respect for you, Piers."

Then Beresford explained where his investment in the issue came from.

"I'm tired of finding a different way to explain not to you, but to so many people on why what has been said is so wrong."
"I've walked into institutions as the only person of color and experienced covert and overt racism on so many occasions and why the Meghan interview really resonates with me is because an ex-work colleague—not on this show—asked me if I was worried about the shade of cocoa that my son was going to come out."
"So I fully understand the hurt that is behind all of that."

In a surprise move, Morgan quit Good Morning Britain Tuesday.

The broadcaster ITV confirmed in a statement Tuesday that "following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add."

Fox News Host Apologizes After His Suggestion That Homeless People Be Euthanized Sparks Outrage

Fox and Friends host Brian Kilmeade was criticized for suggesting that homeless people with mental health issues get "involuntary lethal injection" after the murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a train in North Carolina—and was swiftly condemned for an insincere apology several days after the fact as many are calling for Fox News to terminate his contract.

Zarutska was stabbed to death at the East/West Boulevard station on the Lynx Blue Line in Charlotte last month; her killer, a homeless man with a history of mental health issues, has since been charged with first-degree murder.

Nancy Mace Just Tried To Claim She's Never 'Dehumanized' Her Colleagues—And The Internet Brought The Receipts

South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace was called out for hypocrisy after she claimed on CNN that Democrats in Congress have been "dehumanizing" Republicans, a move she would "never" do—despite her record of doing just that.

Speaking to anchor Katie Bolduan while the search for the suspect who killed far-right activist Charlie Kirk was ongoing, Mace objected to Bolduan's observation that she was using "us v. them" language, only saying that things are "very one-sided right now." She also suggested that the situation is so bad for her that she's actually afraid of "just walking out in public."
