Mitch McConnell Is Getting Slammed for His Bonkers New Impeachment Rules Designed to Cover Up the Trial

Things are heating up in the Senate as the long-awaited Senate trial in the impeachment of President Donald Trump is set to begin on Tuesday.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will officially propose a resolution that will set the rules for the trial. He released the proposed rules Monday afternoon.

McConnell plans to propose that each side—the Democratic House managers prosecuting the case and the legal team defending Donald Trump—get 24 hours of arguments each.

The problem? McConnell wants to fit both 24 hour arguments into two days—forcing Democrats to argue their case in the wee hours of the night.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called McConnell out for his latest attempt to obscure Trump's corruption.

"His resolution creates a trial that is rushed, with as little evidence as possible and done in the dark of night. If their case is so strong, why are they afraid to present it in the light of day?"

As did Democratic Senator Chris Murphy.

In the last week alone, a bevy of new and explosive information from Rudy Giuliani associate Lev Parnas has come to light, strengthening calls for new witnesses previously blocked by the White House to testify before the Senate.

People took to Twitter to mock McConnell's rules with the hashtag #MidnightMoscowMitch and #MidnightMitch, which are top trending topics on Twitter as of this writing.

The impeachment trial against Donald Trump begins Tuesday at 1 pm.

Update: After widespread outcry, McConnell will now allow three days for arguments instead of two. He will also allow for the submission of the House investigations into the Senate's trial record.
