It's not fun to think about or talk about, but the economy is in a tough place right now, and it's important for people to do what they can to ease the pressures of the economy on their lives.
An important step people can take is growing their own gardens, or having some plants in their kitchen if they don't have an outdoor space, funds, or time to maintain a whole garden, and foraging can be an important and achievable option, as well.
What people cannot grow themselves, they might have somewhere nearby that they can forage, or they can exchange fruits, vegetables, eggs, and spices with someone else who's growing their own food.
TikToker @kendallybrown shared that it's important for American families to address the economy, specifically by taking back their abilities to grow and forage their own food without entering a grocery store.
You can watch the video here:
@kendallybrown Americans need to start a food garden IMMEDIATELY—and I want to teach you how to get started for less than $20 over at @Seeds of Rebellion! #creatorsearchinsights #garden #gardening #budget #diy
Fellow TikTokers agreed, pointing out how much grocery prices have increased.

TikToker @mayakindamischief totally agreed, pointing out that there's never been a better time to start foraging.
"There's never been more reasons to start foraging!"
"This economy?"
"The non-stop Cyclospora, Salmonella, and E.coli food recalls?"
"The best way is to pick your own fruit and veggies."
You can watch that video here:
@mayakindamischief Not foraging? In this economy?? Beyond being beneficial for your budget, good for your health, and a fun way to try new flavors, getting to know the natural world around you through foraging is sooo good for your physical and mental wellbeing. And there's never been a better time to start! #foraging #learnontiktok #wildedibles
Fellow TikTokers were actively putting foraging and growing home gardens into practice and sharing their favorite tips and recipes on the platform.
TikToker @theforagerscottage, for example, shares unexpected items to forage and repurpose in countless ways, like twigs!
You can watch their "breadstick" episode here:
@theforagerscottage Have you ever eaten a twig? 🌳 Birch twigs are a wonderful way to keep including wild flavours in your meals through the winter season! 🌿 #foraging #foragingtiktok #wildfood #cottagecore #slowliving
Similarly, TikToker @ForagedByFern took the concept of making kale chips or seaweed crisps and instead uses stinging nettle to make spicy, delicious, and crunchy stinging nettle crisps.
You can watch her stinging nettle video here:
@foragedbyfern This week's activity to get you outside thinking “NATURE IS SO COOL!” 🌱😍 because nettle leaves are some of the most beautiful and tasty leaves in the world! And… the crisps are delicious! 🤤 I ate the whole bowl within 5 minutes of cooking them. Nettles are an integral part of our ecosystem, so please follow the foraging advice in the video. Take just a few leaves from each plant, leaving plenty behind, and check the undersides of the leaves to make sure butterflies haven’t laid their eggs on them before you snip them. 🦋 If YOU love nature and you have just one minute to spare, there is a link in my bio for the petition of the week. Petitions DO make a difference and we need names on them so people in power know what changes we want to make happen. 🙏 Recipe: 20 large, flat nettle leaves from pre-flowering plants Oil for frying 1 tsp salt ½ tsp smoked paprika Makes 1 bowl If giving your nettle leaves a wash, make sure you dry them very thoroughly (if they’re wet, they won’t crisp up) Roll each nettle on both sides with a rolling pin (you want to crush the little hairs - so firm pressure!) Heat a few cm of oil in a pan over a low to medium heat Place a few nettle leave into the oil at a time, and allow to fry for roughly 10 seconds on each side (if your crisps go brown, your oil is too hot! Turn down the heat, wait, and try again, they should stay green) Place the nettles on a tea towel to drain, then pour them all into a bowl, season and enjoy! I do also have a slightly healthier ‘cheesy’ baked version, (more like traditional kale chips) so please let me know if you’d like to see that too! 🥰 #fyp #foraging #nettle
Finally, TikToker @Elsa.Evelyn has been learning about foraging for the past year and has learned that one of her favorite times to forage is immediately after it rains.
You can watch Elsa's video here:
@elsa.evelyn foraging season is well and TRULY apon us! It’s as if overnight the ground has returned to an abundant green state and the hedgerows are filling up with tasty tasty treats! I think I’m going to go for a ‘ official’ foraging trip tomorrow and see what I can find as this is my first spring in Devon! :)
Given how busy and fast-paced our lives are, it might sound like a burden to start growing food or spices, but even growing one or two plants that offer something that you use constantly, like tomatoes or basil, can make a huge difference.
If only it could be a hobby rather than a growing necessity, but alas, here we are.
