The Associated Press Just Made A Super Awkward Fact Check About JD Vance And His Couch
Jul 26, 2024
The 2024 election has officially gotten weird.
This week, the Associated Press, along with many other media outlets, issued a fairly shocking fact check: No, Republican candidate for Vice President JD Vance did not, in fact, have sex with a couch.
Um, okay then! The fact checks come on the heels of a widely viral rumor that Vance...well, had sex with a couch.
The AP has since deleted its fact check article, but that hasn't stopped the uproar about Vance's enthusiasm for sofas, love seats, divans, davenports—any and all types of cushiony furniture, really. Perhaps even a La-Z-Boy? No judgments.
The rumor began with X user @rickrudescalves, who has since gone private, tweeting about Vance:
“can’t say for sure but he might be the first vp pick to have admitted in a ny times bestseller to f**king an inside-out latex glove shoved between two couch cushions (vance, hillbilly elegy, pp. 179-181).”
Unfortunately, given how absurdly hilarious it is, that passage does not exist—hence the AP correction. But that did not stop scores of people, most of them supporters of presumptive Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, from believing it.
As the furor over the rumor grew and grew, multiple media outlets did some detective work. The AP searched a PDF of Hillbilly Elegy for words like "couch" and "glove" and found several instances, but none of them pertaining to Vance making sweet, sweet love to either object.
The Cut also did a deep dive of not just the pages cited in the original tweet—which center on Vance's arrival at Ohio State University—but anywhere else in the book.
But that's no reason not to allow a meme this hilarious to flourish, right? So JD Vance as couch paramour has basically taken over social media anyway.
Anyway, JD Vance didn't bone a couch *as far as we know.* But that doesn't mean he didn't for sure!
So we should probably keep this meme going indefinitely until there's proof.

People Share The Most Obscure Fascinating Wildlife Facts They Know
Jul 26, 2024
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. Earth has a great deal of diversity in both flora—plants—and fauna—animals because the planet has many different ecosystems.
From blazing deserts to frozen tundra, life has adapted to live on most areas of our planet. It's only extremely high peaks where life hasn't been found and that may someday change if the climate continues in the direction it's going.
With so much wildlife all around us, even experts don't know everything about every animal.
Reddit user youngGod928 asked:
"What’s a fascinating fact about wildlife that most people are unaware of?"
But They Don't Shop At ACME
"There are coyotes in every major city in the contiguous USA."
"If you’re in a city in the US, you’re likely less than 1 mile away from a coyote."
~ CariocaInLA
Carry On And Eat Carrion
"Vultures are really important for the ecosystems they live in, but a lot of vulture species are critically endangered due to human activity."
"Vultures have stomach acid so powerful that it can destroy things like botulism and anthrax, thus cleaning up the environment when they eat rotting meat that contains those things."
"There is evidence for a correlation between the drastic decline in India's vulture population and the boom in the stray dog population, since less vultures means there is more food for the dogs to scavenge. This has also sadly led to a rise in rabies which kills many people and animals."
"Many people find vultures scary, but for the most part they are harmless and we really need to have them around. Please consider supporting vulture conservation projects."
~ Expensive_Plant9323
About 7,240 miles (11,577.83 km)
"Some bar-tailed godwits (a wading bird) fly from Alaska to Australia non-stop in the longest continuous migration of any bird (maybe any creature)."
"To do this, they shrink their internal organs so they can pack more fat (for energy) into their body. They’re basically balls of fat when they take off."
"And when they’re in flight, they shut most of their organs down to devote all energy to flying."
"And they’re just medium sized nondescript brown birds that peck around in the mud."
~ KestrelQuillPen
Elephant Information Highway
"Elephants have a specific warning call that means 'human'."
~ BurghFinsFan
"And they have an instant messenger/DM system."
"They stomp codes into the ground to alert other elephants in the area of danger. These seismic waves are too faint for us humans to feel, but are easy for elephants, with their huge feet, to detect."
"Essentially all the elephants in a several-mile radius are actively talking in a groupchat, and you will be the next meme if you try to poach one."
~ NotInherentAfterAll
No Wonder Woody Laughed Like That
"The tongue of a woodpecker is longer than it's head, for a couple reasons. The more obvious one is so that it can reach far into the holes it pecks to grab insects to eat."
"The less obvious reason is that it cushions the bird's brain so it can peck trees without hurting itself. How does it do this?
"Because the tongue WRAPS UP AROUND the brain to keep it from moving!"
~ JPH_RedFive
No Birdbrain
"Crows can mimic human voices similar to parrots."
"I experienced that first hand while hunting on public land. Heard a little boy calling 'MOM, MOM!!' only to realize that the voice came from a crow flying overhead."
~ Riflemaiden1992
Hitting The Treadmill
"If you put a hamster wheel in the middle of the forest, you'd expect that small creatures would ignore it."
"They don't. Instead, they absolutely love it!"
"Scientists believe it's because it provides some kind of novel stimulation that hits the core of most animal brains."
~ bbbbbthatsfivebees
How Do They Compare To Other Marsupials?
"Opossums brains are about 1/5th the size of other mammals their size."
"And mostly smooth—so precious and so dumb."
~ email_queen
"Opossums share a single common ancestor with ALL the marsupials of Australia, because Australia and South America used to be connected across Antarctica."
~ Jak3t
"The Opposum is basically a living fossil. They’ve been around more or less unchanged for 70 million years."
"They appeared soon after the dinosaurs died out for the final time, which to me is a fun thought: the T Rex ceding the crown of Apex Predator to the Opossum."
~ -frank--
Who Gives A Hoot
"Owls bob their heads up and down to help improve their depth of perception."
~ WhimsyyWhisperr_
"They also have one ear the points forward and one that points backwards, to help them pinpoint small sounds."
~ Jeramy_Jones
Little Bandits Steal Your Heart
"Baby raccoons purr and knead like kittens. Raccoons have the most soft, velvety, devilish little hands."
"Did not know this myself until last spring when a wildlife rehabber posted a call to arms for people to help. Figured I've raised enough neonatal kittens, my experience would be helpful."
"A ban on killing raccoons has been lifted in my state and people are poisoning adult raccoons without considering the babies they are orphaning. Last year I raised and released 11. So far this year I've raised and released 27."
"I've also officially become a wildlife rehabber. One of the females I raised last year showed back up, babies in tow! Wasn't sure how she'd respond after being away for a bit but she let me check her out and treat her battle wounds."
~ NyxK83
They Meow And Chirp Too
"Cheetahs are not big cats—as in not related to the big cats: lions, tigers, leopards, snow leopards, and jaguars."
"Cheetahs are very large small cats, more closely related to cats like Servals. DNA analysis proved they're related, with scientists theorizing Cheetahs descended from ancient Servals."
~ I_might_be_weasel
Not Just The Ocean
"Bull Sharks can survive in fresh or salt water. They swim into rivers to have their young because there are fewer predators, hence you hear news stories about sharks in the Mississippi River."
"They are also a**holes and will bite with very little provocation. They cause more 'attacks' than Great Whites, but they're nowhere near as big so they don't do as much damage."
"They are still the 3rd most dangerous shark in the world behind Tiger sharks and Great Whites."
~ CopperTucker
So, Not Good On Cereal
"Whale milk is the same consistency as toothpaste."
~ what-katy-didnt
"Their milk is thick because it needs to have an extremely high fat content as baby whales are putting on a lot of weight each day."
"As a general rule, a whale calf puts on about 5 kg (10 pounds) every hour."
~ NotInherentAfterAll
Awwooooooooooo...
"There is a type of mouse that behaves like a tiny wolf."
"Members of this species travel in packs, hunt live prey, and even howl at the moon."
"It is called the Grasshopper Mouse, named for one of its primary food sources."
~ Master-o-Classes
World's Deadliest Predator
"Back in the day dragonflies ate flesh, were 3 ft long, and dominated the food chain."
~ Exact-Cod-4474
"They still dominate the food chain on their own level and still eat flesh when they can. They're opportunistic feeders."
"They’re the most successful predators in the animal kingdom with as high as a 97% success rate. Most predators fall below a 50% success rate."
"Dragonflies in their larval form can literally expand and shoot their jaw out to catch small fish to eat."

People With Estranged Siblings Explain What Caused The Rift
Jul 26, 2024
In life, all good things come to an end.
The same can be said for most bad/toxic relationships.
Usually that saying would pertain to romantic relations.
But the same can be said for familial bonds.
Not all siblings can complete one another's sentences.
Sometimes not knowing one another is the only way to go.
Redditor youngGod928 wanted to hear about the end of the road for many a sibling relationships, so they asked:
"Siblings who no longer speak, what caused the divide?"
The Parasite
"My brother turned into a parasite, preying on elderly women - our grandmother, a wealthy aunt, and our own demented mother, over the years. He even tried to get me to fund his life. When I took over our mother's finances and refused any payments, he dropped out of my life. He does not need to come back."
- AdministrationLow960
Terminal
"I cared for our terminally ill dad for 2.5 years until his subsequent death and can count on one hand how many times my siblings came by or helped."
- SkrodLaDa
"Same here. I figured I would eventually find this type of comment. Now, it’s my mom, and still nothing from my sister. She’ll call on holidays usually, or if she needs something aka money. She’s just a broken, angry, hateful person and would never concede that so won’t ever get the psychiatric help she likely desperately needs."
"I just don’t give a f**k and she’s worked her older husband into one heart attack already while she sits on her a** and spends what little money they have."
- JohnnyEagleClaw
"Real Family"
"They asked my kids who are adopted to step out of a family picture 'because they are not really family.' I gave them a chance to think about what they just said and silently counted to 10. They doubled down. And that was the last time I (or other family members) spoke to them."
- Zmirzlina
"I had a niece tell me at my adopted grandfather’s funeral 'You weren’t even his real grandkid' all while my adopted father stood there and said nothing. I just told the bi**h I’d known him longer than she’d been alive and continued on."
- FrankAdamGabe
So Far Away
"I haven’t spoken to my sister in a decade, and don’t attend family events where she will be present. She stole my mom’s identity and wracked up almost 20k in unpaid debt. My mom plays it off as a childish mistake (my sister was 27 at the time) and despite my pressing her, my mom refused to press charges. Without her help, the police just had to let it go and my mom paid off the debt."
"My dad died years ago and was estranged. My mom already has a will in place. She listened when my other sister passed away. Got everything lined out and taken care of. Last I saw it, I was the main beneficiary because my mom trusted me to be even-handed with whatever she left behind. However, I wanted to be surprised if my sister manipulated her into changing it because I moved 'so far away' from home. So far away is a 25-minute drive lol."
- TradReulo
Too Much to Lose
"Drugs. It's a shame, I feel for them, but the stakes are just too high. I have too much to lose. They've lied to and stolen from just about everyone else who's given them the opportunity to, so I have to keep away from them. See them at family stuff and am cordial, but I have to understand that the creature inhabiting my brother's skin isn't him anymore and hasn't been for years."
- CollateralSandwich
BYE
"They never reach out and hardly ever reply so I dropped the rope. No animosity, just no desire to keep reaching out and having my feelings hurt. Can't be disappointed if you don't have expectations."
- Repulsia

Years Gone By
"My brother and I inherited a house together when our parents passed away. It's a nice house in a nice neighborhood with a half acre of property with plenty of room. It would have been ideal because there was no way either of us could have afforded a place like this on our own. But he had to go and turn into a raging, insane, alcoholic. The alcohol over the years has rotted his brain."
"Everything in the house that broke was my fault according to him. He would be ranting and raving over some stupid thing every day, usually about what a crappy person I am or some decision I made in my life. The situation devolved into threatening violence and death threats. The problem is, the few times he is sober, he does not remember a lot of what happens."
"I eventually moved out. I'm so much happier now. It got to the point where I feared for my life. So I will not contact him for any reason or respond to emails or phone calls. Usually on Friday nights, he leaves me long rambling messages on my voicemail where I can't even understand what he's saying because he's so drunk."
- Chickadee12345
Such a Fun Family
"She lied about having cancer. I'll just never be able to trust anyone like that in my house and around my family. There's really nothing that can fix it either, I think you need to have something really broken in your brain to do something like that, like unrepairable damage."
- Plastic_Kiwi600
"My grandma lied about having cancer too, and she did it to try to prevent my mom from flying to another country to look after her sister who has major bipolar disorder. Such a fun family."
- GT_Numble
"My sister did the same. She even went as far as giving people with cancer advice on chemo out of her 'own experience' She is perfectly healthy and never had cancer."
"I just can't get over this."
"She's done a lot of stuff but there is no coming back from this."
- noproblemcupcake
She's Dead to Me
"My sister has never liked me. She's six years younger than me. Years ago the mother of my children and I divorced and she has sided with my ex on everything. I'm the main breadwinner and live on one coast due to the industry I work in, my ex lives across the country with the kids to be by family. I see the kids several times through the year and I wish we were geographically closer."
"A couple of years ago my ex was acting erratic and come to find out she was going through either addiction issues or mental health issues. I offered to move her and the family to my city and take custody of the kids. That way my ex could be in their lives but also not have the monetary and day-to-day stress."
"My sister, without ever once talking to me about it or asking questions, went to my kids and told them I was trying to steal them from their mom. It caused incredible turmoil and has taken a ton of time from my side to repair things with them. Things are much better now with my kids through a ton of effort but I'll never speak to my sister again. She's dead to me."
- bobafat
Boundaries
"Alcohol. My sibling has been drinking for 30 years."
"She's in her mid-40s, drunk most days, and posts her relationship drama all over social media."
"She wore a white ball gown to my wedding, and stole items, money, etc from me and my family."
"I don't follow them on social media and I don't see them when I travel near where they live."
"They are unable to respect boundaries so they are choosing to not participate in my life."
- Hsbnd
Oh Well
"They live 5 states away and we’re both lazy."

RAGE!!
"Both my younger sister and I were horribly abused by both parents. There were three older siblings that were wanted and were treated like gold. I moved away and was in therapy for 13 years. Both parents are dead now. She did no therapy, had two kids, one which she can't shut up about and one she can't ever mention."
"Two years ago she took an inheritance that was meant for me and spent it on her house. It was the worst betrayal I have ever experienced, did not see it coming. Still causes painful rage, slowly getting better. Will never talk to her again, and will never have to see that she, has become what abused us both. Still feel like an idiot."
- Green_Message_6376
The Works
"My sister moved her massive 4 kid family and her husband into my dementia-ridden father's house under the pretext of 'helping take care of him' since I live in another state."
"Proceeded to steal every dime out of his pension check for almost a decade, drain the rest of his bank accounts, rack up hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt in his name, buy out his house from him for pennies on the dollar, and essentially leave him alone in his room deteriorating in front of a TV eating Wonder Bread sandwiches while her family regularly live it up - eating out, season passes to theme parks, super expensive car and vacations. The works."
"When I discovered the depths to which she'd abused him and filed for a (third-party) conservatorship, she had the gall to say that I was doing it to steal his money."
- KipKippy
Tee-Hee
"She's a psychopath. Manipulative, self-centered, lies for no reason but to get you to believe lies, has never once acknowledged fault and always turns it around on her accuser. She doesn't operate on, 'Better to ask forgiveness than permission,' she'll lie until she can lie no more and then stand firm at, 'What are you going to do about it?' She has never moved an inch for anyone and tramples over everyone deflecting with a 'tee hee!'"
"Nobody likes her but nobody but me understands why they don't like her and they keep engaging with her to their detriment."
- kuchikirukia1
BLOCKED
"At a certain point, I realized every time I talked to my sister she wanted me to do something for her."
"Every single time. We could not chat without her asking me for a favor of some kind."
"She’s older than me and got into the habit of bossing me around in our childhood I think."
"The straw that broke the camel’s back was our Aunt. She’s in poor health and her children aren’t taking care of her. My sister straight-up said I should be her caretaker. I told her no, for the first time in my life, and she lost her s**t."
"I held my ground, but she wouldn’t let it go so I eventually blocked her phone number, blocked her on social media, etc."
"I miss her sometimes, but I also think family should not be about how much you can use one another and she treated me like I was her personal assistant."
- xajhx
The End
"Time. We just went on with our lives and found different friend groups. We never fought or had any resentments."
- a_random_throwaway_S

Sometimes, family isn't forever.
It's a sad fact.
That's why there are so many chosen families made up of friends and loved ones who don't share DNA.
A sibling bond can be very special.
It can also be an albatross weighing you down.
Relationships end. Often, that is the best choice.

Richard Simmons' Staff Shares The Eerily Fitting Final Pre-Written Message He Had For Fans
Jul 25, 2024
Richard Simmons staff shared the late fitness guru's final message for fans on social media before his untimely death on July 13, a day after his 76th birthday.
Simmons remained mostly reclusive in his later years after he had been an inspirational fitness icon for decades starting with his weight loss-focused programs, notably through his Sweatin' to the Oldies aerobics instruction videos that vaulted his stardom in the 1980s.
Despite his absence from the public eye, Simmons actively engaged with fans on social media through the help of his staff, leaving positive and uplifting messages on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook since 2022.
A week after Simmons' death, his representatives shared his final, especially poignant message to fans that was planned for Sunday, July 14, 2024.
His staff prefaced the note by explaining:
"Hello everyone. Richard worked very hard on his posts for you. He had many ideas and would work ahead… going back to each one making changes until he had it just like he wanted before posting."
"As you know, on the weekends, he would just share a photo with a caption. He always chose his photos and wrote his captions for the upcoming weekend by Friday."
"So we have the post Richard planned to share with you last Sunday. We thought you’d want to see it."
A photo of Simmons wearing an orange NASA space suit and gently smiling accompanied Saturday's post.
He had written:
“Let me fly you to the moon so we can gaze among the stars. Love, Richard”
Fans took the message to heart and thanked his team for relaying the message, post-mortem.
The official page for NASA also responded to Simmons' celestial-inspired post, writing:
"A star among stars! Thanks for encouraging us to stay bright and keep moving!"
Simmons died on July 13, 2024, in his Los Angeles home after suffering a fall the day before.
He refused to seek medical attention as he wished to spend his 76th birthday at home. An investigation is ongoing after police initially reported Simmons's death appeared to be from natural causes.
In March, Simmons reflected on his health scare after being diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, on his face. Following his painful treatment, he urged fans to keep tabs on their health but also to continue hugging their loved ones.
He wrote:
"I know some of you reading this have had cancer or have known someone in your life who has had cancer."
"Promise me you will see your doctor and get a complete check up."
“Tell the ones that you love that you love them. Hug those people and children who you really care for. A big hug really goes a long way," he wrote in a post.
With his signature sense of humor, he added, "Sure, once in a while, have dessert."
After some confusion regarding his health status, he assured fans at the time he was "not dying" and that his message was about "how we should embrace every day that we have."
In his final interview with People, Simmons touched on his preference for staying out of the limelight and was asked if he understood how much he was loved by fans.
“I know people miss me. And you know what? I miss them, too. But I’m able to reach them through phone calls… and through emails.”
Rest in peace, Richard.
Our hearts remain with you in orbit among the stars.

Tori Spelling Says She's 'Super Grateful' For Healing 'Last Conversation' With Shannen Doherty
Jul 25, 2024
Tori Spelling opened up about being "super grateful" for her "last conversation" with Shannen Doherty, who died earlier this month at the age of 53 after a long battle with cancer.
Speaking with her 90210MG podcast cohost and fellow former Beverly Hills 90210 costar Jennie Garth, Spelling revealed she learned from losing loved ones in the past that she didn't want to have any "regrets."
She told Garth:
"I've had a lot of death in my life, and I don't believe in regrets."
“But I have a lot of regrets that I didn't have that time to have a second chance to get past stuff from the past and look at all the good things and really talk it out and have that last conversation."
Spelling added:
"I feel like she and I had that, and I'm super grateful for that."
Garth responded that she was "very glad" her cohost was able to have that moment with Doherty.
“I was thinking definitely of you, Tor, and how happy you must have been to have that time with her and to have that sort of just reconnection on a deeper level as both of you've matured and grown and learned so much."
“I wished that I had had that opportunity because I didn't really get to sit down and have like [a] heartfelt conversation with her recently, but I was very glad that you did."

After Doherty's death, both Spelling and Garth honored the late actor on social media.
Spelling took to Instagram, reflecting on hers and Doherty's friendship over the years.
"I was 15 when Shan and I met. I was the boss’s daughter with no voice and she was the star with a big voice."
"She took me under her wing. She gave me the belief I had a voice and was worthy. We became fast best friends."
"We were each others wing women, true confidantes, support systems navigating bad relationships, roomates of sorts at times, travel buddies, and so much more."
"She always stuck up for me. Always had my back. Always believed in me when I didn’t or couldn’t believe in myself."
Spelling continued:
"We were young. We let a lot of outside and inside influences influence our friendship. In a world where we often don’t get to make up with the childhood friendships that formed so much of the adult you become, we got that chance."
"I’m grateful @theshando and I got to go back in time as adult friends and remember why we truly loved each other to begin with. To reminisce. And, to iconically laugh again like we used to."
"No one could make me laugh like that."
Garth also shared a post on Instagram remembering Doherty, writing in the caption:
"I am still processing my tremendous grief over the loss of my long time friend Shannen, the woman I have often described as one of the strongest people I have ever known."
"Our connection was real and honest."
"We were so often pitted against each other but none of that reflected the truth of our real relationship which was one built on mutual respect and admiration."
"She was courageous, passionate, determined and very loving and generous."
"I will miss her and will always honor her deeply in my heart and in my memories. My heart breaks for her family and Bowie and all the people who loved her. 💔"
It's so lovely that Spelling was able to have one final conversation with Doherty.
