Trump Hit With Blistering Factcheck After Making Patently False Claim About Prices Going 'Way Down'

President Donald Trump was swiftly fact-checked by CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale after he claimed to members of the press that "almost every price has come way down" following Joe Biden's presidency.

Earlier in the day, Trump bragged to reporters that the United States has the "best poverty," sparking immediate criticism. He continued to lie later, even as inflation remains above the level recorded when Biden left office, economic growth has slowed, and the cost of filling a gas tank has surged roughly 50% since the war against Iran began.

Trump said:

"A lot of good things are happening, including for our farmers, thank you all very much. One thing I have to say: With the exception of oil, which is lower than the Biden administration and we no longer have to worry about nuclear weapons with Iran because they're wiped out."

"But with the exception of oil, everything is going down, we have it going down. We inherited the worst inflation in the history of our country and it's going really down. 401Ks are at their all-time high, the stock markets are at their all-time high, and our country is doing really well."

Trump's remarks attracted the attention of Dale, who is no stranger to fact-checking and in many cases even correcting the president.

Responding with a firm "No. Again," Dale added pointed out a very sobering fact in the middle of a nationwide affordability crisis:

"Overall grocery prices are up 3.4% since Jan. 2025, and way more grocery items are up than down. Quick look at the CPI changes for grocery products/categories."

Dale even provided a chart showing the price of everything from cereals to dairy and meat, poultry, and fish—to say nothing of other goods—has skyrocketed in price.

Dale added:

"In summary: The price of eggs has fallen big under Trump after spiking late in Biden’s term because of a bird flu outbreak; a few other items have gotten cheaper, but by much less than eggs; the overwhelming majority of items have gotten more expensive."

"It’s fair to note that grocery prices tend to rise no matter who the president is. But this president keeps lying that there has been grocery *deflation.*"
