According to Hospital das Clínicas at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine in Brazil, history was made nearly a year ago after the first baby was born to a woman with a transplanted uterus after the donor passed away.
Authors of a study published in the medical journal The Lancet noted other children have been delivered to women after receiving a uterus from a living family member, but never before from a deceased donor. The Brazilian baby was the first.
The baby girl was born to her mother, a 32-year-old who had a condition known as Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome causing the absence her own uterus and making pregnancy impossible. She received the new uterus after a 45-year-old mother of three died suddenly from a stroke.
Just over a month after receiving the uterus the recipient began menstruating and within seven months became pregnant via in-vitro fertilization seven months later.
Science is the best!
Both daughter and mother are doing well.
