Shirley MacLaine Just Made A Rare Appearance At 92 To Promote A Screening Of 'Sweet Charity'—And Fans Are Loving It

One has to have a pretty impressive résumé or pedigree to be deemed a "legend." But few would argue that Academy Award Winner Shirley MacLaine is, indeed, a legend of the silver screen.

After being discovered by a Hollywood producer as an understudy in the Broadway musical The Pajama Game, MacLaine launched to almost instant Hollywood stardom after appearing in Alfred Hitchcock's The Trouble With Harry, going on to a prolific, almost 70-year career.

However, the Terms of Endearment Oscar winner has, for the most part, been absent from the spotlight since 2022, appearing opposite Peter Dinklage in the dark comedy American Dreamer, and as part of a two-episode arc in the hit Hulu series Only Murders in The Building.

This week, however, the 92-year-old MacLaine returned to the screen, albeit via Instagram.

The esteemed triple threat recorded a video to promote the Southampton Playhouse's "Tuesday Tunes" series, which will be presenting 1969's Sweet Charity, in which MacLaine played the title role.

In the 37-second video, MacLaine apologized for not being able to attend the screening herself, but expressed her wish to be able to see her movie musical on the big screen again:

"Hi, Southampton Playhouse."

"Wish I could be with you, I would like to see 'Sweet Charity' again."

MacLaine also made a point to remind audiences of the hard work the cast and creative team put in, while also disclosing that the film was a considerable box-office disappointment in its initial release:

"Now, while you’re watching it, remember how hard we worked."

"And, between you and me, it didn’t do very well."

"So, I hope you guys like it!"

"Much love."

After MacLaine blew a kiss to her fans, the video cut to remind patrons that the screening would be taking place on Tuesday, August 25, at 7 pm, and would be followed by a Q&A with Shelby Coleman, the widow of Sweet Charity's composer, Cy Coleman.

Fans of MacLaine and Sweet Charity alike were thrilled to see the now semi-reclusive star re-emerge, even for only a brief appearance:

Based on Federico Fellini's 1957 film Nights of Cabiria, Sweet Charity was first a hit Broadway musical, directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, and conceived as a vehicle for Fosse's wife and muse, Gwen Verdon.

While Fosse successfully campaigned to make his feature film directing debut by bringing Sweet Charity to the screen, there was a concern that Verdon would not be a big enough box-office draw, resulting in MacLaine reuniting with Fosse, whose choreography in The Pajama Game had launched her career.

Despite her four-year-absence from acting, MacLaine had previously told People in 2019 that she never planned to retire, claiming that working keeps her 'bright" and that she "wanted to be a spokesperson for older women."

Indeed, MacLaine will be back on the big screen soon in the Brad Furman-directed People Not Places, which held a screening this past July, attended by animal activist Joanne Horowitz and celebrated in an Instagram post:

A release date for People Not Places, in which MacLaine plays "a sprightly woman in her twilight years" who "strikes up an unlikely friendship with a local homeless man, while struggling to mend a troubled relationship with her son" according to the Internet Movie Database, has yet to be announced.
