Conspiracy-Obsessed 'Stranger Things' Fans Dragged After Crashing Netflix Over Nonexistent Secret Finale

Fans, much like Will Byers in Hawkins, are still struggling to let go of Stranger Things, even if it means crashing Netflix in the process.

Netflix temporarily crashed Wednesday night thanks to the "Conformity Gate" conspiracy theory that predicted a secret ninth episode of Stranger Things would drop—but it didn't come to fruition.

Well, folks, the Stranger Things fandom has officially proven it will not go quietly into the night. Or the Upside Down. Or even a Netflix homepage that’s functioning normally.

On New Year’s Eve, a viral conspiracy theory dubbed “Conformity Gate” convinced a portion of the internet that the blockbuster Netflix series had one more episode hiding in plain sight. Despite Netflix very clearly releasing what it billed as the two-hour series finale of Season 5, some fans became convinced the real ending was still out there.

Waiting. Lurking. Possibly buffering while suffering.

According to the theory, the episode titled The Rightside Up was not actually the end. Believers insisted Netflix was secretly holding back a ninth episode scheduled to drop on Jan. 7, offering an alternate conclusion or surprise twist. The evidence was thin, circumstantial, and deeply speculative, but the conviction was strong enough to send fans swarming Netflix all at once.

Part of the hype can be traced back to Jimmy Fallon’s comedy team and Jamie Campbell Bower, who played Vecna and has unintentionally become the fandom’s favorite accidental instigator.

During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, Bower casually referred to the finale as “episode eight,” a perfectly normal phrasing that conspiracy-minded fans immediately treated like a secretly Christmas-light-coded message.

That moment fanned the flames when Bower appeared in a playful '80s-style aerobics video for The Tonight Show, inspired by Vecna’s noticeably leaner look in Season 5. The sketch was clearly a joke. The internet did not care. At the end of the clip, Bower delivered a line that fans latched onto instantly.

Before the screen cut to red, Bower teased:

“Let’s channel our energy. Tomorrow it begins…”

For fans already convinced Netflix was hiding something, the timing felt suspicious. For everyone else, it was a goofy late-night bit. That distinction did not matter.

And as January 7 approached, Netflix teased a “surprise announcement,” which many fans took as Stranger Things-new-episode coded. Needless to say, around 8 p.m. ET, viewers flooded the platform in anticipation of the supposed secret episode. Instead, Netflix reportedly buckled under the traffic, prompting users on X to claim the service briefly crashed.

No Demogorgons appeared, but the irony was rich. Oh, and of course, the online reactions turned savage almost immediately.

Reacting to the chaos, one user described the moment as:

“The funniest s**t I’ve ever seen.”

Another was less amused, calling it embarrassing for all involved, including not only the fans, but Netflix and the show’s creators.

Speculation became so intense that even the show’s social media account attempted to address the rumors.

Fans noticed the bio plainly stating:

“ALL EPISODES OF STRANGER THINGS ARE NOW PLAYING.”

Subtext: Please leave us alone, y’all.

The backdrop for Conformity Gate was already messy. Season 5 has sparked its share of post-finale controversies, from claims by the actress who played Max’s mom that she wasn’t asked to return amid her cancer diagnosis, to completely unfounded rumors of tension between Priah Ferguson and Winona Ryder. In other words, fans were already conditioned to expect drama.

As for the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers were not exactly subtle either. Ross and Matt shared their thoughts on whether the series could continue during a recent interview.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Ross made it clear the story had reached its endpoint:

“I feel like this season really, truly does close the door on this story… on the story of Hawkins, and the story of the Upside Down and the story of these characters.”

That said, Ross did leave just enough room for chaos to survive, noting that revisiting the original characters—including Mike, Will, Max, Lucas, and Dustin—is not entirely off the table.

As he put it, “I guess never say never.” And just like that, several internet tabs reopened.

When Netflix appeared to buckle under the sudden flood of conspiracy-fueled logins, social media responded with zero sympathy and maximum mockery.

What is coming, however, is One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, a two-hour documentary arriving on Netflix Jan. 12. Directed by Martina Radwan, the Emmy-winning filmmaker behind Girls State, the documentary offers a behind-the-scenes look at the final eight episodes of the series and how the Duffers brought Hawkins to a close.

Speaking with Gold Derby, Radwan addressed the conspiracy:

“I can’t confirm or deny anything, but no. You have to ask the Duffers. I wonder if that’s wishful thinking, because people really want more. They don’t want it to be over.”

Radwan also explained that the documentary itself came from the creators’ lifelong love of behind-the-scenes storytelling.

She added:

“They grew up on making-of documentaries. They hunted down anything they could get their hands on to understand filmmaking. They wanted to give that experience to fans for the final season.”

So, there is no secret finale. No surprise drop. No hopeful return of the traumatized Hawkins crew. Just a fandom struggling to let this one go, a Netflix server that briefly waved the white flag by shutting down, and one aerobics video that accidentally turned the show into an ever bigger conspiracy hub.

Honestly, it’s kind of the most Stranger Things ending imaginable.

JD Vance Slammed After Baselessly Claiming Woman Killed By ICE In Minneapolis Was A 'Deranged Leftist'

Vice President JD Vance was criticized after he claimed without evidence that Renee Nicole Good—the woman fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday—was a "deranged leftist."

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin claimed Good “weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them.” But Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey pushed back against this narrative considering witnesses described seeing Good in the vehicle trying to flee officers when she was shot.

In the past few years, there's been a rising concern in the beauty community and among big social media influencers regarding the authenticity and reliability of beauty brands and products, because of the filters that they use. How can we tell how well a product is working if we can't see the true before-and-after?

But now with the rise of the use of AI in photographs and videos, this is far from limited to beauty products, and the issue really showed its true colors throughout the holiday season.
