The Duffer Brothers Just Made A Surprising Comment About The Future Of 'Stranger Things'—And Fans Are Cringing

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight about the end of Stranger Things and if it might ever come back, the show's creators, Ross and Matt Duffer, gave an answer that left a sour taste in fans' mouths.

Fans haven't exactly been overjoyed about the final season of Stranger Things, and they're not thrilled about the show's potential future either, it seems.

After the show's creators, brothers Ross and Matt Duffer, gave Entertainment Tonight an unusually candid take on what the Netflix series means to them, fans are crying foul.

The Duffer Brothers referred to Stranger Things as essentially a cash cow—and one they're so reliant on they would consider bringing the show back if it would line their pockets.

Asked by ET if the most recent season truly is the last, Matt Duffer said:

“This season really does close the door on this story and the characters.”
“I guess never say never, maybe in 20 years if we’re all broke and need some money."
“We’ve all talked about it; this is our safety net.”

That's an awfully cynical take on such a wildly popular and beloved series whose devoted fanbase put you on the map, right?

It suggests that the story fans have fallen in love with isn't art. It's just a cash machine.

That the quote came amid a wider conversation with ET about a Stranger Things spin-off in the works hasn't really helped dissuade anyone of that notion.

Of that spin-off, Matt Duffer explained to Variety:

"The spinoff is going to delve into [the rock in the briefcase] and explain that, and you’re going to understand it. But it’s a completely different mythology."
"So it’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that... but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining."

The whole thing seems to have turned off the Stranger Things fanbase, who have already been frustrated about the final season and what many have seen as the show's decline for its past several seasons.

The finale has gotten mostly favorable—though not exactly glowing—reviews. But user scores on aggregators like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic have been far less positive, and social media chatter has been intensely critical.

Roll it all together, and Duffer's comments really didn't go over well with the Stranger Things fandom.

Perhaps Duffer was just joking, but it sure doesn't seem like fans have taken it that way.

Woman Says What We're All Thinking About Trump Deploying ICE To Airports In Blistering Interview

A woman interviewed at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey has gone viral for her response to reporters who asked for her thoughts about President Donald Trump's announcement that he would deploy ICE agents to U.S. airports amid a partial government shutdown that has caused exceptionally long delays at TSA lines nationwide.

ICE agents are still getting paid during the shutdown, unlike TSA agents, who are currently working unpaid and struggling amid the affordability crisis. News outlets have confirmed ICE agents have been deployed in airports that serve Democratic strongholds, particularly John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia Airports (New York), O'Hare International Airport (Chicago), and others.

Stephen Miller Caught On Camera Letting Out Heavy Sigh As Trump Tries To Justify Iran War

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller was caught on camera letting out a heavy sigh as President Donald Trump spoke at a Memphis Safe Task Force roundtable in Tennessee about his ever-changing justifications for going to war with Iran.

A WSMV 4 Nashville broadcast showed Miller briefly turning his head and letting out a sigh as Trump described Iran’s missile capabilities as “growing so fast” that the U.S. needed to act before it became “virtually impossible to stop them.” Miller then composed himself and faced forward again toward the president, who was seated at center stage.

Video Of ICE Detaining Sobbing Mom At San Francisco Airport As Her Young Daughter Watched Has People Seeing Red

MAGA Republican President Donald Trump's administration is coming under fire again over White nationalist White House advisor Stephen Miller's immigration guidance.

Campaigning on a promise to deport violent criminals, the Trump administration has instead become the violent (often masked) aggressors that Americans fear. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employees have repeatedly targeted individuals without warrants or just cause based solely on racial profiling, denied people's constitutional rights, and killed people in their detention centers and on the streets with impunity.

Kinks Guitarist Dave Davies Vehemently Shuts Down Moby's Accusations That 'Lola' Is 'Transphobic'

A decades-old rock classic is back under scrutiny, but Dave Davies isn’t letting Moby’s critique of "Lola" go unanswered. In a Guardian “Honest Playlist” Q&A, Moby singled out the track as one he “can no longer listen to,” arguing that its lyrics haven’t aged well.

The “South Side” singer didn’t hold back in his critique:
