Back in March 2025, it was revealed that the administration of MAGA Republican President Donald Trump had slashed funding for Alzheimer’s research as part of their purge of all things diversity, equity, or inclusion (DEI) related.
It was also later revealed that most of the cuts were done by Elon Musk's untrained, unqualified Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) personnel—who couldn't define or describe diversity, equity, or inclusion even after making $16.5 billion of initially listed cuts across 1,127 cancelled or adjusted federal contracts because of "DEI"—using AI filters.
By April of that year, much of the Alzheimer’s research funding was restored following public outcry. A federal court also ruled the blanket DEI cuts were illegal.
Funding was still delayed for months as debates raged over what is or isn't DEI.
Then an unsigned shadow docket 5-4 ruling from Trump's stacked Supreme Court allowed the administration to proceed with $783 million in National Institutes of Health funding cuts.
Now a new report from The Guardian documented that another $15 million in grants, specifically at Emory University and the University of Pittsburgh, for research into the causes of Alzheimer’s were canceled in July 2026 because of the Trump administration's targeting of anything they deem DEI-related.

Trump has a personal connection to Alzheimer’s disease, beyond speculation that he suffers from the disorder.
His father, Fred Trump Sr., began showing significant signs of memory loss and disorientation in his late 80s, eventually leading to an Alzheimer's diagnosis. The family reportedly had staff members set up an office to feed the family patriarch fake work to do while keeping him separated from actual business decisions and contacts.
Family members—including Trump's niece and nephew, siblings Mary L. Trump and Fred Trump III—have cited a family history of degenerative cognitive conditions. However, the POTUS has downplayed or denied any such family history.
