South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace was widely mocked after she challenged California Governor Gavin Newsom to a debate—only for him to directly address her "Don't California My South Carolina' campaign with a list showing the stark differences between their two states.
Mace posted a video on X in which she extends a "FORMAL INVITATION" for Newsom to debate her "common sense policies," chiding him with the following message:
"He's [Newsom] challenging everybody to debate and he's too scared to hit the stage with me. We definitely don't want a California, South Carolina, and I hope like heck that he will accept my debate challenge."
"I love a good debate and I would love to take him and his hair gel on."

Newsom responded not long afterward with the following brutal list showing just how far California is ahead of Mace's own state:
"So you don't want: lower homicide rates, lower gun death rates, lower taxes for working families, lower maternal mortality rates, higher GDP, higher wages, higher life expectancy, free pre-kindergarten, free community college, free school meals, and total domination in every major industry."
He then made the following pointed remark mocking Mace for pushing transphobic legislation and for policing for transgender women in bathrooms:
"Time for a bathroom break, Nance."

Many applauded Newsom's response and criticized Mace themselves.
Newsom has not responded to Mace's debate offer.
He remains a major target for the Trump administration, which last month sent the National Guard and the Marines into Los Angeles as part of its widespread immigration crackdown.
Newsom called President Donald Trump "real scum" while responding to reports about a federal immigration raid on a large cannabis farm in Southern California that prompted demonstrators to clash with ICE agents who sprayed tear gas in an effort to disperse them.
