Attorneys from New York City asked a federal judge on Monday, August 3, to dismiss President Donald Trump's lawsuit which has been aimed at keeping them from his financial records.
As a reason for the judge's dismissal, the attorneys cited "extensive and protracted criminal conduct" going far beyond Trump's well-publicized, campaign "hush-money payments."
This suggests that the Manhattan criminal investigations into President Trump are going far beyond what the public originally knew about.
According to District Attorney Cy Vance's team, the investigations into now-President Trump may follow him back to days long before he had even thought about the White house.
"...there were public allegations of possible criminal activity at Plaintiff's New York County-based Trump Organization dating back over a decade."
Trump's latest lawsuits attempting to keep his financial records out of the hands of attorneys come on the heels of a Supreme Court decision that the President is not immune to state-level grand jury subpoenas.
Of this new probe into his finances, the President of the United States said:
"It's Democrat stuff. They failed with Mueller. They failed with everything."
Meanwhile, Trump's lawyers are trying to stop the probe on the claim that it is "overbroad."
The Manhattan district attorney's office responded by saying:
"Plaintiff's argument that the Mazars Subpoena is overbroad fails for the additional reason that it rests on the false premise that the grand jury's investigation is limited to so-called 'hush-money' payments made by Michael Cohen on behalf of Plaintiff in 2016."
US District Judge Victor Marrero, after reviewing the subpoena, determined it was not "overly broad"
This line of investigation began in 2019 when investigative journalists at ProPublica reported "discrepancies about the information the Trump Organization told tax authorities and lenders about its business."
NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio then asked District Attorney Vance to look into the matter. Vance reportedly questioned former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and received documents from him on multiple occasions.
It will likely be a long time before the details of these attorneys investigations into President Trump become common knowledge, but when they do they're sure to make a significant impact.
