People Share The Dumbest Thing They've Ever Done Because Their Brain Was On Autopilot

Am I even awake?

We've all been there. We've all done it. Sometimes the brain just stalls, or at the very least the cognizant functioning. The brain is a machine, somebody has to be running it. When autopilot switches on, its like being awake and asleep. So walking around amongst society can be dangerous thing. But we all go stupid now and again.

Redditor u/IaniteThePirate wanted everyone to share some DUH life moments by asking.... What's the dumbest thing you've ever done because your brain was on autopilot?

This looks familiar...

Started a new job, got to my old work place before I realized what I'd done. Lavamad

Not exactly the same but, sometimes if I'm off on a day I usually work and I go to hang with friend or do errands, I find myself taking the same route to get to work. sanzojoe

So Sweet.

I work front desk at a hotel. The daytime staff work either 7am-3pm or 3pm-11pm. Sometimes when I'm working the PM shift I'll accidentally say "night night" instead of "goodbye" when I go to hang up the phone. It's an uncomfortably intimate thing to accidentally say to a stranger on the phone.

It's even worse if I know the guest was in a different time zone so it's not even nighttime where they are. PizzaNotFrenchFries

So Far Away...

When I was a truck driver I drove 200 miles down the wrong freeway and had to turn around and drive 200 miles back. I never told my dispatcher and he never caught it. Demonae

I did that once. Unfortunately I had to tell my dispatcher of my mistake as it threw off the rest of my loads for that day and made it impossible to do them and the one I had was going to be late. Then a couple weeks later I missed the backhaul message and deadheaded back empty. I felt like an idiot and he treated me like on for a bit too. SkipTheStorms

Delirious.

Once I was sick, and not thinking too well. A package delivery person rang the doorbell. Me, not thinking, got up from the couch, walked up to the door, and knocked on it. Then I opened the door to a mildly confused delivery man and took the package. It wasn't until I had closed the door, box in hand, that I realized my error. AndroidUser37

Ditto.

Couple times a year I'll say "love you" to a business colleague when ending a phone call. My wife gets a kick out of that. PaulClifford

Burn This.

I printed out an essay and then threw it right into the trash. Observation_Bot

Self-criticism is important. is_it_controversial

Cut it Off!

Shaved off an eyebrow. Was shaving my chin etc and my eyebrow got itchy so i scratched it... with the razor. just_cruisn

I did the same dumb mistake except on my nose :( I cut myself but luckily it wasn't deep. Just made me feel stupid. ClearNightSkies

Forgotten Wheels.

I drove to work one morning, promptly forgot, and then took the bus home, leaving my car in the parking lot. Wonderfullness

I did this with my bike and didn't realize for over a week. nonablu

Spit it Out!

I used nail polish remover instead of mouthwash after brushing my teeth. It was... awful. kellywithayy

NOOOO!!!!

Locked my vehicle and tossed the keys inside before shutting the door. jgear319

I just did this today. But my trunk was open so I climbed inside my trunk and tried to push the seats down. I'm also 15 weeks pregnant. My husband sat there and watched me struggle for a minute before he told me the passenger door was still open... we had a good laugh. CocoB17

Man Goes Viral After 3D-Printing A 6-Pound Phone Case To Combat Screen Addiction

Many Millennials will remember back in the nineties as the last of the "latchkey kids" who were prominently babysat by their televisions, and the commercials that rolled out, made popular on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, promoting kids to go play outside instead of watching TV all day.

Now in 2025, videos on Instagram and TikTok encouraging people to "pause their scroll" and to "put down their phones" are becoming more common and popular, because people are realizing how detrimental our increasing screen time is to our emotional, physical, and psychological health.

Woman Sparks Heated Debate After Encouraging People To Smile At Walmart Greeters

There's an old saying that goes, "It costs nothing to be kind."

Smiling at a stranger, saying hi back to a young and socialable child, holding a door for someone, and maybe even exchanging a pleasantry or two at the checkout line costs nothing more than a few words passing our lips and showing a little kindness.
