‘Super Smash Bros.’ Switch: Which Fighters Will be Included in the Roster?

During a Nintendo Direct stream on March 8, 2018, Nintendo revealed a host of exciting games and ports, including Okami for the Switch and the original Luigi’s Mansion for the 3DS. Overshadowing all, however, was the announcement of the highly anticipated Super Smash Bros. sequel.

Scheduled to launch on the Switch, the aptly-titled Super Smash Bros. has been a hot request among the fan community since the system’s first reveal. In a trailer (seen below) that first looked like new Splatoon 2 content, Nintendo finally delivered. When it comes to the Super Smash Bros. series, one of the biggest debates to form immediately after a reveal is what the roster will look like.

If the initial trailer is any indication, Splatoon’s playful Inklings will be joining the frantic fight, but there is always room for more. In the shadow of the fiery Super Smash Bros. logo, we were treated to silhouettes of Mario and Link from Breath of the Wild, but the rest of the line up remained shrouded in darkness. Considering the pattern of the series, other fighters like Luigi, Donkey Kong, Sheik, Captain Falcon, Star Fox, Pikachu, Peach, Bowser, Ganondorf and Zelda are likely to return.

Nintendo has been known to throw a few curve balls when it comes to stacking the roster for fans as seen with Solid Snake and Cloud Strife, so it’s not ridiculous to think that, with the Dark Souls remaster scheduled for the Switch, the Ashen One will make an appearance. With the success of the Skyrim port on the Switch, the Dragonborn could also be a featured character.

Considering Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U featured 58 playable fighters, it’s possible Nintendo will look to either match or increase that number. An even 60 would provide enough space to pay tribute to the classics while making room for new fighters. Currently, there’s no slated release date, but Super Smash Bros. will undoubtedly have a presence at E3 where more details will emerge.
