Ellie Goulding Perfectly Shuts Down One Of Her Own Fans Who Made A Transphobic Comment About Her Outfits

There are plenty of ways to compliment Ellie Goulding’s wardrobe. Dragging trans people into it for absolutely no reason probably isn’t one of them.

Over the weekend, one fan learned that lesson after praising the British singer-songwriter’s recent “feminine” looks before taking an anti-trans detour that Goulding quickly shut down.

Because apparently, “You look great” was just too easy for this fan:

“I’m so glad your recent outfits are so feminine–lace, silk. They really highlight your beauty; I prefer them over those ‘trans’ looks aimed at a specific community, and I think you do too–you’ve been looking lovely lately.”

And to think, “I love your recent looks” could’ve wrapped this whole interaction up nicely. Instead, somebody decided to turn a compliment into a transphobic plot twist.

Perhaps the bigger miscalculation was assuming Miss Ellie wouldn’t have the time—or the thumbs—to clap back. Goulding has publicly supported the LGBTQ+ community for years, including in 2019 when she threatened to pull out of an NFL Thanksgiving halftime performance after fans alerted her to LGBTQ+ discrimination allegations involving The Salvation Army.

True to form, Goulding kept her response short and crystal clear:

Even the clapback came with British manners: “Girl, no thank you.”

Her response has since racked up more than 35,000 likes, as fans celebrated the singer for making it clear that anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric has no place in her fandom.

X user @StephenB1906 praised Goulding for consistently standing with the LGBTQ+ community:

“Seeing you advocate against hate towards the LGBTQ+ community is so reassuring and never goes unnoticed. Your advocacy and constant support means to much to many of us.”

“Constant” is well-earned praise. Back in 2016, Goulding stopped one of her concerts so a gay couple could get engaged. Six years later, that history of allyship was recognized when she received the Ally Award at the annual Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards, honoring her longstanding support for the queer community.

When Goulding took the stage to accept the honor, she had a message for her fellow allies:

As for the fan who started this particular "Lights"-out moment? Their X account now limits who can view its posts, meaning the comment that kicked off the exchange is no longer publicly visible.

Of course, shutting down transphobia isn’t the only thing keeping Goulding busy these days. There’s also a whole new era of music to talk about.

The singer-songwriter released her sixth studio album, I Know Too Much, through Polydor Records in September. The 10-track project follows 2023’s Higher Than Heaven and features “For Your Entertainment” as its focus track.

Goulding put the album’s themes into her own words:

“I Know Too Much was written about love and power, trust and instinct. The stories we tell ourselves about other people, and the stranger ones we tell ourselves.”

The road to I Know Too Much has hardly been quiet. In 2024, she reunited with Calvin Harris for “Free,” following their chart-topping collaboration “Miracle.” In 2025 came “Save My Love” with Marshmello and Avaion, alongside her solo single “Destiny,” which Goulding said was inspired by the heartbreak and lingering questions she experienced following her divorce.
