LGBTQ+ fans are praising Mel C after the Spice Girls star expertly navigated an awkward conversation about sexuality during a recent interview.
Known to millions as Sporty Spice, Melanie Jayne Chisholm became famous for her signature tomboy aesthetic, powerhouse vocals, and relentlessly athletic stage presence—complete with tracksuits, crop tops, sneakers, back handsprings, and enough high kicks to qualify for the Premier League.
But during the height of Spice Girls fame in the 1990s, tabloids frequently leaned on the tired stereotype that a woman who dressed in sportswear or didn’t present as ultra-feminine must be gay.
During an appearance on The Mitch Churi Chat Show, she was asked about those long-running rumors:
“Did you get accused of being gay? Was that the accusation? 'Cause you were the Sporty Spice?”
The wording from Mitch Churi immediately raised eyebrows online, with many listeners pointing out that describing being gay as an “accusation” felt more than a little outdated.
She gently corrected the framing of the question:
“Well, I never called it an ‘accusation,’ an assumption…”
“I shouldn’t have said that,” the interviewer—a member of the LGBTQ+ community—exclaimed, visibly mortified by the mistake.
Mel playfully responded:
“Have you got a problem with lesbians?!”
While the rumors followed her throughout the Spice Girls’ peak fame, Mel C has long embraced her close relationship with the LGBTQ+ community and remains one of pop music’s most vocal allies.
She then added:
“We love all of the community.”
The topic is hardly new territory for the singer, who has spoken for years about the assumptions made about her appearance during the Spice Girls era and how reductive much of that coverage now feels.
Churi later clarified he was referring to the press treatment surrounding the group:
“But you know what I mean; like, the press were awful to you guys.”
Mel C then reflected on how quickly people drew conclusions because her image differed from those of her bandmates, Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie “Mel B” Brown, and Geri Halliwell-Horner.
She explained how the stereotype followed her for years:
“You’ve got all the different ones and the one who’s in the active wear … it was assumed or suggested that I was gay.”
While she said she never personally took offense to the rumors themselves, Chisholm criticized the assumptions behind them.
She addressed the tabloid narrative directly:
“I don’t personally have a problem with that… I mean, it’s none of their friggin’ business. But I just thought … to base it on somebody’s look or the way that they dress, yeah, it was a bit s**t of them.”

Chishom is also mother to 17-year-old daughter Scarlett Star. She shares the teenager with her former long-term partner, Thomas Starr, whom she dated from 2002 to 2012. The “Spice Up Your Life” singer is currently in a relationship with Chris Dingwall.
Over the years, Mel C has repeatedly pushed back against the idea that short hair, sportswear, or not dressing hyper-feminine somehow signals a person’s sexuality—a stereotype that now feels about as current as dial-up internet.
Mel C previously criticized the stereotypes attached to her image:
“People said I looked like a lesbian because I had short hair.”
Fans online quickly praised Mel C for both correcting the language around the topic and refusing to treat queerness as something negative.
The internet overwhelmingly applauded Mel C’s response:

Mel C has also been keeping busy professionally. The singer recently shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Rebel Wilson’s upcoming music-driven comedy film, set in the world of girl bands and pop music.
Wilson wrote, directed, and stars in the project, which also features Jennifer Coolidge, Nicole Scherzinger, Randall Park, Sheridan Smith, Jamie Lee O’Donnell, Guz Khan, Jolene, Loren Gray, Ashley Roberts, and Shaznay Lewis.
Mel C praised the upcoming film:
“It’s hilariously funny, as you would imagine with Rebel, so that was loads of fun. There’s some great music in it, some great performances, and a lot of laughs.”

And while the interview touched on everything from tabloid culture to possible Spice Girls reunion chatter, it was Mel C’s response to that one awkward question that clearly resonated most, especially with LGBTQ+ fans who praised the singer for shutting down outdated stereotypes without missing a beat.
