'Love Island' Contestant Kicked Off Show For Using Racial Slur That Far Too Many People Don't Know Is A Slur

Love Island USA contestant Cierra Ortega was kicked off the reality show after social media users alerted producers to her past use of a racial slur—and many people shockingly admitted that they didn't even know it was a slur.

A second participant of the latest installment of Love Island USA was asked to leave after fans pointed out her use of a racial slur.

Yulissa Escobar was sent home after podcast videos showing her repeatedly using the n-word came to light. Now Cierra Ortega's social media has sent her packing.

Ortega used a racial slur to describe her eyes in several posts online, like the one below.

The slur is a racist take on "Chinese," but is often directed at southeast Asians in general or used to describe anything perceived as Asian.

Ortega's departure followed weeks of online calls from fans for her to be dropped from the show over her repeated use of the word.

But while some fans wanted Ortega to be treated the same as Escobar for using a racial slur, some people claimed on the Love Island USA Instagram account that the word wasn't a slur, or they didn’t know it was, or that it wasn’t as bad as what Escobar said.

After returning home, Ortega posted a video apology, stating:

"In that moment, I was embarrassed."
"I was apologetic and I educated, not only myself on the true meaning and history of the word, but also anyone around me.
"I think the backlash has obviously been very hard to deal with."

According to Ortega, she posted the slur in 2024, but a friend told her it was racist and she immediately deleted it.

People Explain Which Industries Are More Corrupt Than Anyone Wants To Admit

As consumers, we all have some corporations that we support and others we do not, based on the brands we use and the topics we focus on. And we'll inevitably have some opinions about the corporations we don't support.

But there's a possibility that they might be much worse in nature than we even gave them credit for.
