A significant portion of messaging from President Donald Trump's 2020 platform is devoted to decrying so-called "cancel culture," the phenomenon in which private citizens disavow and boycott the work of private companies or fellow citizens whose ideals they find harmful.

As the American death toll from the pandemic exceeded 170 thousand, Trump contributed to this phenomenon himself.

The President fired off a tweet calling for all of his supporters to boycott Goodyear tires.

The President claimed that the company's policy enforced a "BAN ON MAGA HATS," which he asserted after conservative television network Fox News covered the supposed policy.

The story on Fox displayed a Powerpoint slide purportedly from a Goodyear human resources training presentation in which apparel supporting Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ positions was deemed acceptable, while MAGA hats and Blue Lives Matter paraphernalia was not.

Melissa Monaco, a representative of Goodyear, told WIBW:

"Goodyear is committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful workplace where all of our associates can do their best in a spirit of teamwork. As part of this commitment, we do allow our associates to express their support on racial injustice and other equity issues but ask that they refrain from workplace expressions, verbal or otherwise, in support of political campaigning for any candidate or political party as well as other similar forms of advocacy that fall outside the scope of equity issues."

The company reiterated this at length in a tweet responding to the outcry.

The statement read in part:

"First, the visual in question was not created or distributed by Goodyear corporate, nor was it part of a diversity training class. To be clear on longstanding corporate policy, Goodyear has zero tolerance for any forms of harassment or discrimination. To enable a work environment, free of those, we ask that associates refrain from workplace expression in support of political campaigning for any candidate or political party, as well as similar forms of advocacy that fall outside the scope of racial justice and equity issues."

Goodyear went on to express that it supports both equality and law enforcement, while forbidding the expression of support for any political candidate—not just Trump.

The tweet was met with further outrage from conservatives.

Meanwhile, Trump's inciting tweet was met with befuddlement.

Some were confused about the President's participation in "cancel culture."

Others pointed out that Goodyear is the only major American tire company left—and it's headquartered in the swing state of Ohio.

Not to mention, Goodyear tires are used by law enforcement—and on Trump's own security detail.

It's unclear yet if Trump will retire their usage.
