With the news of a GoFundMe campaign to fund the US-Mexico border wall (Yes, the same wall that Mexico was supposedly going to pay for, not American taxpayers), many thought things had gotten as 2018-ish as possible. Not so.
Luke O'Neil, a freelance journalist from Boston, recently started a GoFundMe campaign of his own: Build a Giant Escalator Over the Wall. Of the fundraiser, O'Neil says,
The wall is never going to be built but just in case it is we will build a series of giant escalators that are spaced out a half mile along the wall on either side and if that doesn't happen we'll just give the money to people who care about the well being of human beings no matter where they're from.
He goes on to clarify,
The escalators are a metaphor please do not come and investigate me ICE or whoever I'm not really going to build a series of giant escalators it's a joke to raise money for this good cause. To be clear all the money goes to RAICES a very worthy immigrant legal services charity and there is no way for me to access it even if I wanted to.
RAICES is, according to their website,
a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees.
The internet has quite a bit to say about this new campaign.
