Since his inauguration, Donald Trump believes he's made good on a lot of his campaign promises and that things have been going smoothly at the White House. Most Americans would disagree.
According to a new poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, half of Republicans said Trump kept his promises.
On the contrary, the real-estate mogul's promise to repeal the "disaster" that is Obamacare continues to struggle to find a replacement. Replacing the Affordable Care Act was one of the first assurances Trump gave Americans but wound up saying, "Nobody knew healthcare could be so complicated." He failed to solidify plans for the much-touted wall along the Mexican border. He also promised he would "rarely leave the White House" because of all the work he'd have in the Oval Office. We all know what happened to that pledge. His time at the golf course cost taxpayers $7.7 million in funds.
The AP poll also revealed that 63 percent of Americans believe that the president tried to impede or obstruct the Russia investigations. 86 percent of Democrats, 67 percent of independents and 24 percent of Republicans agree.
Four in ten Americans believe Trump did something illegal concerning Russia, and 3 in 10 say Trump has done something unethical.
The AP also reported, "Just three in 10 Americans said the United States is heading in the right direction, and 52 percent said the country is worse off since Trump became president — worrisome signs both for the White House and Republicans heading into a midterm election year where control of Congress will be at stake."
Debra Nunez, 65, doesn't identify with either party. She still believes Trump broke the law. She said, "If you go back and do a rewind, you say, 'Yep, he's guilty.' He's lied so badly to us from the beginning until now. He was involved in it. He knew what was going on."
The survey also showed that 38 percent of those polled believe that the Russian investigation is extremely important, while 54 percent aren't confident that the congressional investigations will be conducted fairly.
Melinda Mclaughlin, who identifies as an independent, believes that issues like tax reform and economics are essential in addition to the Russia investigations. "I do feel like there was either collusion or a connection there that affected the election, and I do not feel like the president is telling the truth about his involvement in it," she said.
Only 9 percent of Americans believe Trump united the country, but less than half of Republicans polled, at 41 percent, think Donald Trump divided the nation more than uniting it.
The AP poll surveyed 1,444 adults from Nov. 30-Dec. 4 and 1,020 adults from Dec. 7-11, with the margin of error falling at plus or minus 3.7 percentage points for the first survey and plus or minus 4.3 percentage points for the second.
