GOP Senator Defends Donald Trump Seeking Foreign Interference In Our Elections Saying 'People Do Things, Things Happen'

GOP Senator Defends Donald Trump Seeking Foreign Interference In Our Elections Saying 'People Do Things, Things Happen'
ABC News

The Senate is gearing up for a historic impeachment trial against President Donald Trump, who withheld congressionally approved aid from Ukraine on the condition that its leaders announce investigations against his political opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden.

Days after taking an oath of impartiality, some Republican senators are making the rounds to defend Trump's actions.

Among them? Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL), who chalked Trump's actions up to "Things happen."

Watch below.

When asked by ABC's George Stephanopoulos if it was improper for the President to pressure Ukraine to influence the United States election, Shelby said:

"I didn't say it was OK. I said people make them — people do things. Things happen."

Reminded by Stephanopoulos the standards most Presidents are held to, Shelby again dismissed Trump's actions:

"Well, still the president of the United States is human. And he's going to make mistakes of judgment and everything else."

As more and more evidence confirms that the extortion of Ukraine wasn't a mistake, but rather a coordinated effort, people are calling out Republicans like Shelby for refusing to acknowledge how bad this looks for Trump.

Arguments in the Senate's impeachment trial of Donald Trump begin on Tuesday.
