People Share Which Industries They Believe We Should Let Die

Capitalism - where anything can be a business. And it's getting out of hand. There are lots of industries that don't really need to exist, but everyone's gotta make a buck. But remember, there is no ethical consumption under capitalism - and wouldn't it be nice if we could get rid of for-profit health insurance?

spatchi1 asked: What industry should we just let die?

Submissions have been edited for clarity, context, and profanity.

10. Want a pet? Adopt.

Puppy mills. Those places treat the dogs/puppies horribly and most of the time the animals there are very sick.

therealRayRiver

And breeding animals to the point they can't survive without constant human assistance. Looking at you bulldogs.

ComfortableKitten

I had a hard time being excited about my friend's new puppy recently because I knew it came from a place that uses mills :(

I'm glad the dog got a good home but I'm sad that it supported that industry.

9. Seriously.

The TicketMaster and StubHub ones that charge a $45 fee for a $150 ticket.

100PercentRudos

This is so true. I recently wanted to see a band I love but I couldn't stomach all the fees, so I didn't go. There needs to be a better way to buy tickets.

Dottie_Dottie

I bought two tickets at $75 a piece and after it was all said and done it ended up being $220!!!!! Like what the F*CK?

8. It's a cult, through and through.

Scientology, the ultimate MLM, and it shouldn't just die out, it should be killed with fire.

7. Homeopathy.

'Health' quacks who 'cure' cancer with imaginary vitamins and other sh*t. Anyone who backs B17, turpentine, Jilly Juice, etc. Taking advantage of the terminally ill and convincing them to partake in dangerous, torturous 'treatments' which can even speed up their death is just not an industry that deserves to exist. Look up Jeff Holliday or Myles Power on youtube for some more examples.

selcouth_devotee

Jilly Juice

There is more salt in this sh*t than the ocean. I didn't even know Salt Poisoning was a thing until I researched this.

Neato

Oh boy.

Used to date a girl who's dad got diagnosed with late stage lung and brain cancer. Doctors basically told him he had a few months to live and to get his affairs in order. Said he could do treatments if we wanted, but that people just don't come back from this and that given his families financial state, would have put them in serious debt.

Anyway, a person she knew from school would relentlessly tell her that all he needed to do was drink some smoothie made out of all kinds of veggies and roots and that cancer would be gone in no time. Guy was so insensitive, she was in agony every day watching her father wither away while this nut would gleefully tell her not to be sad because cancer can be cured, it's just big pharma that doesn't want us to know about it.

We usually just walked away because it infuriated me and also upset her, but on one occasion I came really close to grabbing him by his collar and asking him if his magic elixir could also cure a broken jaw.

6. Always and rorever, creepy.

Child beauty pageants. They're children for Christ's sake.

Tim-Fu

To the parents, they are living dolls to make their immature but somehow still breathing dreams of being a model come true in the closest way they know how. It's selfish, abusive and mentally damaging for all parties involved.

The fact that it's 2019 and people still buy into this nonsense is honestly heartbreaking.

4. Predatory.

I'd like to see an end to pay day loans. They straight up profit off human misery.

spatchi14

Like any financial product, they have a place and can be useful in certain circumstances. However, the marketing and actual deployment of the lending is disgusting and predatory.

There should be robust and auditable eligibility / suitability processes with significant penalties for non compliance.

Regrettable_tattoos

If they only ever gave out loans for the times they were useful - say the person who needs £20 until payday, then pays off the loan plus a small amount of interest immediately - they'd probably go out of business. The can only thrive by screwing people over and going for those insane amounts on top of trivial loans, or people who want money regularly for things they don't need.

3. It would be nice.

SINGLE USE PLASTIC.

typically_right

In this vein I think they should bring back glass equipment in hospitals. I know that for hygiene reasons they use a lot of single use plastics and throw everything away but equipment made of glass can be properly sterilized and used again. Even if they don't wanna have it in the hospital at least it could be cleaned and the glass re used unlike the plastics that can never be properly sterilized.

Jess_more_or_less

Why we use plastic not glass in hospital is quite complex, in many cases single use plastic is the only way to guarantee no cross contamination. But many hospitals could certainly cut down on medical waste by not simply tossing things that are not meant to be single use, in my local hospital they stopped throwing rolls of tape away after using it on one patient, the hospital saved 10 thousand dollars in one month (this is a large urban hospital mind you) little things like that can make a huge difference. Like switching to wax lined paper barf bags instead of plastic pans.

2. Car dealerships.

Okay straight up the car lot industry, because they have a garbage monopoly on how we buy, sell, and drive.

Edit: If you want to know what I meant by this comment I recommend Adam Ruins car dealerships episode on Netflix.

Soupallnatural

I knew that someone would comment with this one, so I came here to upvote you and comment.

Terrible experience. I tried to turn around once in one of these lots and no joke it was like a zombie movie. They all walked slowly towards me with those fake smiles...they were all pretty bummed when I told them I was just turning around in their lot.

Rynin101

They're scared this is happening, I know a dude who owns a dealership (several generations down). He's trying to sell because he knows it's just a matter of time. I think in the next 20 years we'll see it at least start to fall apart

1. Demand is literally destroying entire ecosystems, and it's in everything.

Palm oil.

hibiscustea22

Yep. There are perfectly viable alternatives, and yet they put palm oil in everything.

codered434

Whats wrong with it?

EverythingElectronic

I've only done a bit of research on the topic, but I guess it's a considerably large contributor of deforestation, and it's killing endangered species along with infamously killing off lots of orangutans.

Tucker Carlson Dragged After His Conspiracy Theory Prediction About Trump's Speech Is Way Off

Former Fox News personality turned far-right podcaster Tucker Carlson was widely mocked after he made a bold prediction about what President Donald Trump would announce during his primetime address to the nation on Wednesday—namely that the U.S. would go to war with Venezuela.

But it turns out Carlson was very, very wrong. The speech was nowhere near that consequential and Trump spent the majority of it complaining about former President Joe Biden.
