Melania Trump Plagiarized Whole Sections of Her Convention Speech From Michelle Obama

[DIGEST: Gawker, Jezebel]

Melania Trump delivered the headlining speech at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland last night––and at least one entire section was lifted from Michelle Obama’s speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Journalist Jarrett Hill was the first to notice the similarities, which appeared to copy a section in which Obama talked about her husband’s hard work, strong values and personal code of ethics.

Transcripts of the parts in question indicate a nearly word-for-word similarity which began about two minutes into her address:

TRUMP: "From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. That your word is your bond. And you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect. They thought and showed me values and morals in their daily life."

OBAMA: “And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond, that you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them."

Melania Trump claimed that she wrote the speech herself, and that she worked with a speechwriter for six to eight weeks in preparation for the convention. The Trump campaign released a statement that did not acknowledge the controversy. Instead, the campaign praised her for speaking openly about her “immigrant experience.”

Elsewhere in her speech, Melania Trump made an attempt to soften her husband’s image,  referring to him as “a president for everyone.” The Trump campaign has continued to tout its candidate as a champion of law enforcement with a militant stance on immigration. Organizers invited the relatives of people killed by immigrants who entered the country illegally to speak at the convention. Until now, Trump’s role throughout the campaign has been minimal, some critics assert, because she reminds social conservatives of the billionaire’s two divorces. A Trump campaign adviser told reporters that Trump does not view herself as a political spouse. "She knows her husband," the adviser said. "She doesn't inject herself unless she thinks it's necessary."

Gay Olympian Gus Kenworthy Reveals His Surprising Celebrity Parallel To 'Heated Rivalry'

The characters of Heated Rivalry have inspired thirst-trap TikToks, memes, and award-show commentary—and now, an Olympian. Or, as Gus Kenworthy recently suggested, maybe the inspiration ran the other way.

In an interview with The New Yorker published Sunday, the British-American freestyle skier acknowledged the striking “parallels” he sees between the hit series and his own private life, particularly in the years before he publicly addressed his sexuality.

'America's Next Top Model' Winner Calls Out New Documentary For Viewing Show Through 'Woke Lens'

The 1990s and early 2000s were a very different time when it came to entertainment, especially how women and people of color were treated on television.

An infamous example of this was the hit television show America's Next Top Model, which ran for 24 seasons. There have been stereotypes and distasteful jokes circulating forever about what it takes to be a model, most focusing on dietary restrictions and infidelity, but America's Next Top Model took that to an entirely different place.

Conservatives Are Melting Down Over 'He-Man' Movie Joke About Pronouns—And They Missed The Point Entirely

Conservatives have basically two cherished hobbies: caterwauling about trans people and missing the point of every joke. And with the release of the trailer for the new He-Man movie, they got to do both in one go!

Nicholas Galitzine stars as the titular super hero in the upcoming film adaptation Masters of the Universe, and given our times, it's only natural the film would make a joke about pronouns.

Even MTG Is Demanding That MAGA Admit The Killing Of Alex Pretti Was Completely Unjustified

Former Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene continues to speak out against the MAGA movement that brought her to national prominence, this time calling on Republicans to condemn the killing of Alex Pretti by ICE agents in Minneapolis.

Calls for an investigation have intensified from across the political spectrum after analysis of multiple videos showed ICE officers removing a handgun from Pretti—a weapon that authorities said Pretti was permitted to carry but was not handling at the time—before fatally shooting him.
