Country star Maren Morris was visibly stunned by Stephen Colbert's vocals after they performed an a capella rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" together on The Late Show.
The two launched into their duet after Morris shared stories about some of the odd places she sang while growing up—including at amateur wrestling matches when she was in high school.
After Colbert asked if she could join him in a rendition of the national anthem, he admitted:
“I know the bassline, I don’t know the melody. I think you and I could rock it."
Morris advised him to start low:
"That’s the rule. If you start too high, you forget you gotta go real high at the end on ‘Rocket’s red glare.'"
The two began singing and Morris couldn't hold back her surprise and joy as Colbert matched her vocal enthusiasm.
At the end, a laughing Morris asked, "Where did that come from?" to which Colbert responded that "you've got to have a fallback," joking that his role as the host of The Late Show "isn't going to last forever."

Morris is embarking on a solo tour later this year, following an impromptu performance style similar to her spontaneous duet with Colbert. Her upcoming RSVP Redux tour, set to kick off in late May, will give fans in each city the opportunity to curate the setlist for their show.
The singer shared that she's taking her time with the creation of her next album. Despite the anticipation following her 2022 release, Humble Quest, Morris disclosed that she's currently navigating personal matters and allowing herself the necessary time to process and write through these experiences.
Morris said she is "giving [herself] the time to do that and not having to rush a very huge personal thing through an album being delivered," adding that "it’s going to take a little bit longer than I had hoped, but I have to trust the process.”
