Star Wars actor Mark Hamill had a withering response after Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump, faced a wave of social media mockery after a video of her singing at Mar-a-Lago went viral.

Lara Trump, who married Eric Trump in 2014 at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, has a history of involvement in her father-in-law's political endeavors.

The video, shared by liberal activist Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of MeidasTouch, shows Lara Trump performing her version of Tom Petty's 1989 hit "I Won't Back Down."

Filipkowski noted that Lara Trump was performing "the hit single she ripped off from Tom Petty for her fans at Mar-a-Lago."

Shortly afterward, Hamill—a vocal critic of the Trumps—chimed in on the recent video, saying, "I weep for Tom Petty," to express his disapproval of Lara Trump's performance.

Social media users echoed Hamill's sentiments.

This isn't the first time Lara Trump's rendition of "I Won't Back Down" has stirred controversy.

The song was used during a 2020 campaign rally for Donald Trump, prompting a cease-and-desist letter from Petty's family. The controversy resurfaced when Lara Trump released a new acoustic cover of the song in November, further drawing criticism for what some deemed a "cheap move."

At the time, Petty's estate said the musician—who made no secret of his progressive politics when he was alive—would have disapproved of Trump's use of the song, saying Trump "was in no way authorized" to use it "to further a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind."
