The 'Daily Show' host paid tearful tribute to his family's dog, Dipper, a day after he passed away, noting that 'in a world of good boys, he was the best.'

Jon Stewart broke down in tears on The Daily Show on Monday while paying tribute to his dog Dipper who passed away on Sunday.

In the clip posted to X (formerly Twitter), Stewart, just three episodes into his return to the show, told the audience about how Dipper made his way into his family's hearts and home.

He began:

"A little bit of a story..."
"About 12 years ago, maybe 13 years ago, my kids wanted to raise a little money for an animal shelter down in New York City."

Stewart shared that the family baked cupcakes and set up a table outside the shelter, Animal Haven, to raise money, and that's when they met their Dipper.

"As an incentive, they brought out this oneish-year-old Brindle Pitbull who..."

At that moment, Stewart became emotional and grabbed a box of tissues.

He explained that the Pitbull had been hit by a car in Brooklyn and lost his right leg.

Stewart continued:

"They put the dog in my lap, and we left that day feeling really good we had helped this organization."
"And we also left with this oneish-year-old Pitbull. We called him Dipper."
“In a world of good boys, he was the best."

The host shared that Dipper often accompanied him to work on The Daily Show.

“He met actors and authors and presidents and kings. And he did what the Taliban could not do, which is, put a scare into Malala Yousafzai.”

Stewart revealed that, sadly, Dipper died the previous day.

“Dipper passed away yesterday. He was ready. He was tired, but I wasn’t. And the family, we were all together.”

He finished:

“My wish for you is one day you find that dog, that one dog…It’s just…It’s the best."

Stewart then dedicated his "moment of zen" to Dipper by sharing a sweet clip of him playing in the snow.

Viewers of the clip expressed their heartbreak and sent their condolences, echoing Stewart's sentiment that dogs are, indeed, "the best."

Rest in peace, Dipper. Sending our love.
