ICE Released a Statement in Honor of Human Rights Day and It Went About as Well as You'd Expect

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is one of the most controversial sects of government in the United States.

From widespread raids targeting longtime residents to extended detainment of American citizens to using a fake university to lure immigrant students on education visas, the organization routinely faces criticism for its human rights abuses.

Now, in a case of irony that Alanis Morissette couldn't even imagine, ICE released a statement commemorating Human Rights Day.

The statement was released by ICE's Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center, and read:

"The women and men of ICE dedicate themselves every day to protecting the dignity and human rights of people around the world. Through our work investigating perpetrators of genocide, torture, war crimes and other violations of human rights, they are committed to seeking the prosecution and removal of human rights violators seeking refuge here. We will not allow the United States to be a safe haven for those who violate human rights."

While ICE may be confident in its efforts to deport human rights violators, its respect for human rights is widely considered lacking. Some—like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY)—say that it should be abolished altogether. It's a relatively new sect, having only been founded in 2003.

People found the declaration in support of human rights tone-deaf at best.

At least 24 immigrants have died in ICE custody since President Donald Trump took office.

Design For New Commemorative Coin Featuring Trump Just Dropped—And People Can't Believe It's Real

On March 19, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), comprising people appointed by MAGA Republican President Donald Trump, unanimously approved a final design concept proposed for a 24-karat gold United States semiquincentennial commemorative coin.

Instead of featuring the Declaration of Independence or some other images central to the foundation of the nation in 1776 or more universally recognized symbols from the last 250 years, the CFA chose a sketch based on a photo of Trump leaning over the Resolute desk in the Oval Office for the coin's obverse or "heads" side.

Gavin Newsom Said What We're All Thinking About Trump's Decision To Deploy ICE To Airports

After President Donald Trump moved to deploy ICE agents to U.S. airports amid a partial government shutdown that has caused exceptionally long delays at TSA lines nationwide, California Governor Gavin Newsom pointed out exactly why the move is so troubling for citizens and non-citizens alike.

ICE agents are still getting paid during the shutdown, unlike TSA agents, who are currently working unpaid and struggling amid the affordability crisis. News outlets have confirmed ICE agents have been deployed in airports that serve Democratic strongholds, particularly John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia Airports (New York), O'Hare International Airport (Chicago), and others.
