The New York Times reported this week that former President Donald Trump's Justice Department—under the direction of then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions—subpoenaed Apple for the phone data of at least two Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee. The Justice Department also seized the data of their aides and family members, including at least one minor.

According to the Times, the seizures were part of an effort to uncover the sources behind leaks regarding Trump associates' ties with Russia. Apple only turned over the metadata of the officials, and not photos or emails.

The report also details what an unprecedented move the seizures were:

"The zeal in the Trump administration's efforts to hunt leakers led to the extraordinary step of subpoenaing communications metadata from members of Congress — a nearly unheard-of move outside of corruption investigations. While Justice Department leak investigations are routine, current and former congressional officials familiar with the inquiry said they could not recall an instance in which the records of lawmakers had been seized as part of one."

After the seizures offered no evidence of leaks, the investigation began to wane until Sessions' successor, former Attorney General Bill Barr, revived it by bringing in an outside prosecutor.

One of the targets of that investigation was then-Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff (D-CA), a favorite enemy of the Trump Administration for his role in Trump's first impeachment.

Because the gag order on the subpoena expired only this year, Schiff and other targets of the investigation only recently found out about the subpoenas.

In a Thursday night interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo, Schiff railed against the Trump administration for its "terrible abuse of the rule of law."

Watch below.

Schiff said:

"I view Bill Barr as the second most-dangerous person in the country after Donald Trump and this is just further proof of that."

He responded to the news on Twitter as well.

People shared his outrage.

The New Jersey prosecutor Barr brought in to revive the case in 2020, Osmar Benvenuto, is still at the Department of Justice.

The news comes just after multiple reports that the Trump administration also seized the communications of multiple journalists.

Stephen Colbert Rips CBS For Banning Interview With Texas Democrat Due To FCC Threat

Late-night host Stephen Colbert criticized CBS for attempting to ban him from interviewing Texas Senate candidate James Talarico, and from even mentioning the interview on air, due to threats from Brendan Carr, the chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Talarico, who represents Texas in the state House, has previously made headlines for calling out Texas Republicans for "trying to force public schools" to display the Ten Commandments and has generated significant buzz as a forceful voice for Democrats in a state largely in the hands of the GOP.

American Girl Dolls Just Got An 'Ozempic' Makeover For The 'Modern Era'—And People Are Not Impressed

There's nothing quite like the grip American Girl dolls had on Millennials during the mid-1990s and early 2000s.

Created in 1986 by the Pleasant Company, American Girl dolls were meant to model positive core values with dolls that resembled young women from various time periods across American history and different favorite hobbies, like horseback riding and cheerleading.

'Wall Street Journal' Ripped After Saying Millennials And Gen Zers Are 'Splurging' On 'Rotisserie Chickens' Instead Of Buying Homes

It's sadly all too common for older generations to look down on millennials and criticize their constant complaining about how "hard" life is and how they can't afford to be homeowners.

That criticism almost always ignores factors like the rising cost of housing, increasingly low salaries, and a continuous housing shortage.

Trump Roasted After Making Bonkers Comparison Between Gas Prices In Iowa And California

President Donald Trump was widely mocked for making a nonsensical comparison between gas prices in Iowa versus California during a ceremony at the White House in which he was given an award for being the "undisputed champion of beautiful clean coal."

Trump's recognition reportedly came from the Washington Coal Club, a pro-coal advocacy organization with financial links to the sector. The award was presented by James Grech, chief executive of Peabody Energy, the nation’s largest coal producer. The bronze trophy depicts a miner equipped with a headlamp and pickaxe.
