Trump Mixes Up Candidates In Deleted Tweet For Ohio Special Election

On Thursday, the absent-minded president urged Ohio voters to support a candidate who isn't running in the special U.S. House election.

Donald Trump enthusiastically endorsed Republican candidate Steve Stivers (R-Ohio) in a deleted tweet that confused many voters.

"Congressman Steve Stivers of Ohio has done a fantastic job as chair of the [National Republican Congressional Committee]," Trump wrote in the since-deleted tweet. "Go out and vote for Steve on Aug 7.

According to Politico, Stivers is a four-term congressman and chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee who already ran unopposed in May's primary race.

However, Stivers will face Democrat Rick Neal on November 6 for Ohio's 15th District.

Trump's false alarm was deleted 10 minutes after posting and tweeted a replacement 30 minutes later with no explanation or mention of the former blunder.

This time, Trump urged voters to support GOP state senator Troy Balderson for next Tuesday's special elections.

Balderson is running for the 12th congressional district seat against Democratic candidate Danny O'Connor.

"Looking forward to being in the Great State of Ohio on Saturday night where I will be campaigning hard for a truly talented future Congressman, @Troy_Balderson," he wrote in the replacement tweet. "See you all then!"

Trump's now deleted tweet that endorsed Stivers confirmed that the president tweets can never be taken at face value.

The deleted tweet opened the floor for plenty of mockery.

Whether it's the president himself or close members of his team who are responsible for the embarrassing gaffe, deleting the tweet proved futile.
