'Supernatural' Star Misha Collins Backtracks And Apologizes After Appearing To Come Out As Bisexual

Fans rejoiced when Supernatural actor Misha Collins alluded to disclosing he was bisexual during a Q&A session at Creation Entertainment’s Supernatural Official Convention in East Brunswick, New Jersey Saturday.

Don't get too excited though.

There seems to have been a misunderstanding.

During the event's meet and greet session, the 47-year-old actor–who played the role of the angel Castiel in the popular CW fantasy drama from 2008 to 2020–asked fans:

“How many of you would consider yourself introverts?"
"How many extroverts?"
"And how many bisexuals?”

He then mumbled:

"I'm all three."

You can hear Collins in this clip taken by a fan.

Without elaborating further on his sexual identity, Collins jokingly continued:

“See, it would have been weird if I just said: ‘By a show of hands, how many bisexuals are in the audience?’"
"But I’d rather do it as a questionnaire, that’s more socially acceptable.”

Excited fans reacted online based on Collins' statement.

After the buzz that Collins identified as bisexual circulated online, the actor cleared up the confusion and apologized for "misspeaking" on Monday night.

"My clumsy intention was to wave off actually discussing my sexuality," he admitted in a Twitter thread. "But I badly fumbled that and understand that was seen as me coming out as bisexual."

He continued:

"This was not my intention so I need to correct the record: I am not bisexual."
"I happen to be straight, but I am also a fierce ally and the last thing I want to do is falsely co-opt the struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community."
"I believe and fully support that we need to sanctify the human right to express our identities honestly and to be free to love whomever we choose openly."

He concluded by apologizing for the "clumsiness of my language" and he said he wants to be a "better ally."

"I feel sick to my stomach that I might have done anything to make things worse."
"I’m trying to learn, trying to do better and I will keep listening. Thanks and I’m sorry."

Some fans remained forgiving and attributed the misunderstanding to clickbait.

Others fans either rolled their eyes or made wisecracks over the sexual identity blunder.

Collins's Supernatural character, Castiel, was actually a part of the LGBTQ+ community, which was evidenced when he professed his love for Dean Winchester–played by Jensen Ackles–and (spoiler alert) wound up sacrificing himself to save Dean in the show's 15th and final season.

During a virtual panel at the Darklight Online Convention in 2020, Collins touched on Castiel's adoration for the elder Winchester brother.

"Castiel tells Dean he loves him and basically makes Destiel canon," he said, adding, "which is, woah!" Fans are kind of freaking out after that."

"To complicate matters, he dies after that. So Castiel makes this homosexual declaration of love, which is amazing that that happens, and then he dies right after, which plays into a timeless Hollywood trope of 'kill the gays,' which pisses off [fans]."
"So, we give and then we take away."

Collins has been married to Victoria Vantoch since October 6, 2001. They share a 12-year-old son, West Anaximander Collins, and a nine-year-old daughter, Maison Marie Collins.

In a 2013 Larry King interview, the actor did mention he and Vantoch have engaged in threesomes together in the past.

"She has been [okay with another woman entering the equation] at times and at other times, she has not been," he said of Vantoch.

"The current situation is, change the diapers [for our kids]. ... It's really hard to squeeze [having a threesome] into the schedule at the moment."
