Amid the revelation that Fox News host Sean Hannity wasĀ Trump attorneyĀ Michael CohenāsĀ mystery third client,Ā Vanity Fair's Gabriel Sherman called into MSNBC to report that Hannity hired Cohen last year "to help defend him against left-wing groups" that launched an ad boycott followingĀ Bill OāReillyās ouster from Fox News in the wake of sexual harassment allegations.
āYou know, this is a fast-moving story, so I am going to be doing a lot more reporting but what I have heard so far is that at some point last year Sean Hannity hired Michael Cohen to help defend him against left-wing groups that were calling for boycotts in the wake of Bill OāReillyās ouster from Fox News,ā Sherman told MSNBC's Ali Velshi.
He added that Hannity "got paranoid" and hired Cohen after he came under fire for propagating conspiracies about the death of Seth Rich,Ā a Democratic National Committee staffer. Hannity has claimed that RichĀ was killed in retaliation for leakingĀ information damaging to Hillary Clinton to Wikileaks.Ā Rich was killed on a Washington street in the middle of the night last year. The crime remains unsolved. Fox News published the story on May 16 only to retract it later,Ā saying the story didnāt meet its āstandards.ā
āThis could be interesting because oftentimes private investigators are hired by law firms because it allows attorney/client privilege to be maintained,ā Sherman continued. āSo there is a scenario in which if they seized Michael Cohenās documents inadvertently we might be able to learn to what degree did Sean Hannity try to go after his enemies with shady tactics like private investigators.ā
When Sherman was on MSNBC detailing his reporting,Ā Hannity contacted hostĀ Nicolle Wallace and, in an official statement, denied he'd ever hired Cohen to defend him against left-wing attacks.
During his show last night, Hannity assured his viewers that the story about his connection to Michael Cohen, whoseĀ home, office, and hotel room were raided by federal agents last week, had been blown out of proportion, adding thatĀ "the media has been absolutely apoplectic and hyperventilating" over the story:
Let me set the record straight, here's the truth: Michael Cohen never represented me in any legal matter.Ā I never retained his services. I never received an invoice. I never paid Michael Cohen for legal fees. I did have occasional, brief conversations with Michael Cohen, this great attorney, about legal questions I had.Ā MyĀ discussion with MichaelĀ Cohen never rose to any level that I need to tell anyone I was asking him questions...Predictably, without knowing all or, frankly, any of the facts, the media went absolutely insane. Wall-to-wall, hour-by-hour coverage of yours truly. Am I surprised by any of this? Of course not, because this is what the media in this country does.Ā I had no personal interest in this legal matter. That's all there is, nothing more.
Hannity also took to Twitter to deny he ever retained Cohen's services.
Hannity also used his Twitter account to respond to the MSNBC report, writing, "What part of Michael and I never discussed anything that involved any third party is so hard to understand?"
That Hannity's professional relationship with Cohen has come under scrutiny is unsurprising. Hannity has served as President Donald Trump's de facto mouthpiece since his days on the campaign trail. It's common knowledge, for example, that Trump and Hannity are very close and keep in constant contact. In recent days, Hannity has claimed that Cohen was the victim of an unfair raid by federal authorities.
Hannity has also used his platform to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 presidential election. Last week, the president made headlines after he promoted a Hannity segment which compared Mueller to a crime boss.
āBig show tonight onĀ @seanhannity! 9:00 P.M. onĀ @FoxNews,ā the president wrote on April 11 at 5:48 p.m. EST.
During the show, HannityĀ presented a āMueller crime familyā chartĀ that suggested the special counsel is in league with the ādeep stateā to remove Trump from office.
āIf heās going to use this sweeping analogy, Iāve decided tonight weāre going to useāthe āComey standardā I call itāand make some comparisons of our own,ā Hannity said, starting the mob boss section of his program with an aside he called āThe Clinton crime family.ā
Delving into the sexual assault allegations against former president Bill Clinton, Hannity said. āHillary Clintonāwe know she committed crime,ā a reference to the FBIās investigation into her use of a private email server despite the organization finding no evidence of criminal acts perpetrated by Clinton while she served as Secretary of State.
While describing the āMueller crime family,ā Hannity likened the Russia investigation to a āwitch huntā and accusedĀ Muellerās office of ālooking the other wayā during his time as a federal prosecutor in Boston.
On April 10, the day of the Cohen raid, HannityĀ declared that āthereās no limit at all into the fishing expedition that Mueller is now engaged in."
Cohen has found himself at the center of the questions regarding a payment Clifford received from himĀ as part of the non-disclosure agreement to keep her from discussing a sexual encounter with TrumpĀ back in 2006,Ā while heĀ was married to his current wife, Melania, and just a few months after Melania gave birth to their son, Barron. A separate lawsuit filed by CliffordĀ contends that Cohen initiated a ābogus arbitrationā hearing against her without notifying her beforehand, and a copy of the restraining order against CliffordĀ confirms that the judge made a āone-partyā ruling that did not require her to be notified.
Cohen has claimed that he paid Clifford out of his own pocket and that the president never reimbursed him for the settlement. But during aĀ highly publicizedĀ 60 MinutesĀ broadcast,Ā Cliffordās attorney, Michael Avenatti, presentedĀ documents showing that the payment was sent to Cohen at his Trump Tower location, and communicated through his official Trump Organization email, indicating that he made the payment on Trumpās behalf. Analysts have posited that the exchange of fundsĀ could well be an illegal campaign expenditure on Trumpās behalf.
