Trump Campaign Lawyer Says Trump Used His Services 'to Perpetrate a Crime' in New Court Filing

In addition to pressuring GOP legislatures in swing states and flooding social media with lies, the infamously litigious outgoing President, Donald Trump, has filed dozens of lawsuits since Election Day in his effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election, which he lost to President-elect Joe Biden by 74 electoral votes.

Nearly all of these lawsuits have failed, especially in the bellwether state of Pennsylvania. The Supreme Court—three of whose Justices were appointed by Trump—dismissed two cases filed by pro-Trump lawyers seeking to invalidate the Commonwealth's certified results.

Trump's lies that the 2020 election was stolen by Democrats came to its most gruesome culmination yet on Wednesday when pro-Trump extremists stormed the U.S. Capitol, halting the joint session of Congress that later certified Biden's victory.

The insurrectionists infiltrated the Capitol, forcing Vice President Mike Pence—who was presiding over the session—to evacuate, while lawmakers and journalists scrambled to take refuge in offices and behind chairs.

By the end of the night, four people had died. Tear gas was deployed and guns drawn inside the Capitol. Offices were ransacked and the Senate floor was defiled as the extremists paraded through it freely.

The unprecedented siege of the Capitol by domestic terrorists has alarmed many of Trump's own officials, some of whom have since resigned.

Now, one of the lawyers representing Trump in yet another quixotic lawsuit to overturn Pennsylvania's results wants out.

Jerome Marcus, a lawyer representing the President in Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. v. Philadelphia County Board of Elections, filed a motion to withdraw as Trump's counsel in the District Court case.

Marcus wrote in the motion:

"The undersigned respectfully requests leave of this Court to withdraw as counsel for plaintiff ... inasmuch as the client has used the lawyer's services to perpetrate a crime and the client insists upon taking action that the lawyer considers repugnant and with which the lawyer has a fundamental disagreement."

But with Marcus repeatedly defending the fraud lies that motivated pro-Trump extremists to storm the Capitol, the court of public opinion wasn't kind.

There are growing calls to remove Trump from office for fomenting the coup attempt.

Trump has only 13 days left in office, but lawmakers on both sides of the aisle emphasize that each day he's in the White House presents a national security threat.

Democrats won races around the country, particularly in Virginia, where Abigail Spanberger became the first woman to the win the governorship in the state's history, and in New York City, where Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, successfully took on the establishment to become the first South Asian, first Muslim, and first millennial mayor-elect.
