Fans of Shakira expressed their disappointment after the singer revealed she was less than impressed by Greta Gerwig's Oscar-nominated film Barbie.
Shakira, the latest cover star for Allure, was asked if she had seen the film, to which she replied:
“I watched it, yeah.”
After a long pause, the interviewer prompted her with:
"And?"
And the Grammy winner elaborated:
“My sons absolutely hated it."
"They felt that it was emasculating."
The singer revealed that she shared their take.
"And I agree, to a certain extent."
"I'm raising two boys. I want 'em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women."
"I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide."
She continued:
"I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well."
"We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”
Shakira finished her thoughts on the topic:
“Just because a woman can do it all doesn’t mean she should?”
“Why not share the load with people who deserve to carry it, who have a duty to carry it as well?”

Fans of Shakira were disappointed by the singer's analysis and took to social media to express their dismay, many noting she "missed the point" of the film.

A few, however, defended the singer or voicing her opinion.
Shakira's two sons, 11-year-old Milan and 9-year-old Sasha whom she shares with ex-partner Gerard Piqué, are featured on the song "Acróstico” from her new album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.
Of her first album in seven years, the singer revealed Mujeres helped her "transform" her "pain into creativity" following her 2022 split from Piqué.
“I was in the mud. I had to reconstruct myself, to reunite all the pieces that had fallen apart.”
“Making this music has shown me that my pain can be transformed into creativity. The songs are full of anecdotes and some very intense emotions I have experienced in these two years."
"But creating this album has been a transformation in which I have been reborn as a woman. I have rebuilt myself in the ways I believe are appropriate."
She finished:
"No one tells me how to cry or when to cry, no one tells me how to raise my children, no one tells me how I become a better version of myself. I decide that.”
