People Explain Which Professions They Think Are Vastly Overpaid

I met someone once who made a living walking dogs for rich people. The money she made? Bonkers. She said she had to clean up a lot of dog crap, true, but that she was making a killing because so many of the dog owners couldn't be bothered to walk their dogs themselves.

She was making thousands of dollars per week... which left me wondering: What the hell am I doing with my life? I need to learn to like dogs more, clearly. To her credit, she acknowledged that she was well overpaid.

And she's not the only one. People shared their observations with us after Redditor Necessary-Bun asked the online community,

"What job do you think is so overpaid?"

"In college..."

"In college I housesat often for a little weiner dog in a pretty fancy house. Being in college, I usually napped during any free time, so the dog would sleep on my chest when I lay on the floor to sleep. His "mother" typically paid me at least $100 for maybe 4-6 hours of sitting every time."

Richan-Renne

Definitely a lucrative gig but consider that she wasn't paying you so much for labor as she was for giving her peace of mind.

"I feel if Jesus were here today..."

"TV preachers. I feel if Jesus were here today he'd be going to those super churches and flipping tables. Those places seem more like entertainment venues than churches."

RSquirrel

They would nail him to a cross if he were here today.

"Not nearly as technically demanding..."

"Data scientist in big tech. Not nearly as technically demanding as software engineering and not as taxing on time as product management, but paid in the same ballpark."

I imagine that some positions will be as described but it’s not one of those things you can easily jump right into.

"Don't come begging..."

"College administration."

"Don’t come begging me for money for your “alumni fund” (or, even worse, for feeding and clothing poor and hungry students - yep, they send me those emails) when I can’t pay off my student loans, and the Deputy Vice Provost of Student-Media Relations is bringing home hundreds of thousands of dollars a year - and there are dozens of them at every campus."

Karnakite

It's prety amazing how brazen many of these schools are.

"A lot of people..."

"A lot of people are saying influencers but don’t realize most of them are broke and it’s just a fabricated image."

KEGdagoat

Worth noting that a lot of the stuff they have is given to them for free because it's cheaper than paying them to advertise the product.

"They don't bring..."

"Hospital administrators. They don't bring sh*t to the table in terms of medical knowledge or patient care, dictate to medical professionals with years of education and experience how to do their jobs, and get paid the most to do it."

BigClemenza

Every doctor I've ever met–especially those that work in the ER–has told me that this is accurate.

"There are so many layers..."

"Hospital CEO’s… and actually almost all hospital upper management. There are so many layers of management that many of them barely step foot into a healthcare facility EVER, let alone EVER speak to a patient, yet all of them make 6, 7, 8 figure salaries plus mega bonuses."

usongm

This applies to university administrations too. They're constantly making up new positions with 6 figure salaries while raising tuition.

"Teachers do the heavy lifting..."

"School administration boards. Teachers do the heavy lifting, yet a lot of these bodies routinely deduct their pay for “resources” for the school."

[deleted]

It's painful how true this is. And thanks to COVID-19, many teachers are burnt out.

"I have had jobs..."

"Most upper management in an office setting. I have had jobs where I have multiple bosses and only one really understands what the people that work for them actually do."

Admiral_Fancypants

This is a big reason why so many people hate working in offices... can you blame some of them for wanting to keep working from home?

"There is so little transparency..."

"Realtors. There is so little transparency in the whole home buying process. Sounds like there are moves to get away from paying them as a percentage of sale which is good. Home inspection I get, money lending and finance but I don’t think most realtor earnings are justified by their value to sellers and purchasers."

Central_PA

For every good realtor, there seems to be no shortage of bad ones. Transparency is certainly needed.

I don't know about some of ya'll but... and this is going to sound terrible... it looks like I might need to hunt for a new career. It's hard out there.
