Comedian Nick Cannon received a blunt history lesson after claiming on a recent episode of his web talk show Big Drive that the Democratic Party is "the party of the KKK."
After his guest, model Amber Rose, said that Democrats “don’t care about people of color and the Republicans do,” Cannon said:
"I agree with you 100%. People don’t know that the Democrats are the party of the KKK. People don’t know that the Republicans are the party that freed the slaves."
"I mean, both of you and I have some conservative views. You’re just a little bit more outspoken than I am. And honestly, I don’t subscribe to either party."
"I rock with W. E. B. Du Bois, when he said there’s no such thing as two parties. It’s just one evil party with two different names.”
You can hear what Cannon said in the video below.
Cannon is wrong because the Republicans of Abraham Lincoln's day bear no resemblance to the Republicans of today.
Lincoln's opposition, the Southern Democrats, defended slavery in the 19th century and proposed the racist laws that were on the books for decades well into the 20th century. The United States presidential election of 1860 formalized the split in the Democratic Party and brought about the American Civil War.
The monopoly Southern Democrats held in the southern states after the war fractured as support for desegregation and civil rights reforms took center stage and many white southerners switched to the Republican Party at the national level subsequent to the passage of civil rights legislation.
Thus, the claim that Democrats are "the party of the KKK" is about as false and misleading as a claim Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul made several years ago about Democrats bearing responsibility for the creation of Jim Crow laws, which were state and local laws enforcing racial segregation in the Southern U.S.
It is the Republicans of today who are leading a nationwide immigration crackdown that has disproportionately targeted Latinos and other people of color.
President Donald Trump himself has for decades been accused of racial animus and claimed during his 2024 campaign that immigrants are "poisoning the blood of our country," echoing fascists like Adolf Hitler, who wrote about "blood poisoning" in his book Mein Kampf.
Cannon was swiftly called out.
Sounds like Cannon might need to pick up a history book.
