After the recent historic meeting between North Korea's Kim Jong Un and South Korea's President Moon Jae-in, there has been much talk of the level of credit Donald Trump deserves for this diplomatic breakthrough.
At a rally in Michigan on Saturday, Trump claimed he deserved credit for "like, how about everything" and the crowd agreed, shouting "Nobel! Nobel! Nobel!"
As in the Nobel Peace Prize. Turns out others agree as well. On Wednesday, 18 Republican members of the House sent a letter to the Nobel Committee officially nominating Trump for the honor.
The letter reads:
“His Administration successfully united the international community, including China, to impose one of the most successful international sanctions regimes in history,” the letter says. “The sanctions have decimated the North Korean economy and have been largely credited for bringing North Korea to the negotiating table.”“Although North Korea has evaded demands from the international community to cease its aggression for decades, President Trump’s peace through strength policies are working and bringing peace to the Korean peninsula,” the letter says. “We can think of no one more deserving of the Committee’s recognition in 2019 than President Trump for his tireless work to bring peace to our world.”
Trump's two previous nominations for the prize were ruled invalid since they had been forged, allegedly by the same person. The Nobel Committee only considers nominations valid if they are made by "qualified nominators," which include, according to the Nobel Committee's website, “members of national assemblies and national governments (cabinet members/ministers) of sovereign states as well as current heads of state."
This nomination would be for the 2019 prize.
