Man Charged After Accidentally Shooting Himself In His Sleep While Dreaming About Intruder

Man Charged After Accidentally Shooting Himself In His Sleep While Dreaming About Intruder
Lake County Sheriff's Office

Mark Dicara of Illinois has been charged with possession of an illegal firearm and reckless discharge after shooting himself in the leg in his sleep.

A man in Illinois has been charged after he allegedly shot himself while he was asleep.

Mark Dicara said he was dreaming and shot what he thought was a burgular, but awoke to find he had instead shot himself in his own leg.

Police said the gun used was a .357 Magnum and did not hurt anyone but Dicara.

"The round discharged from the firearm went through Dicara's leg and lodged itself into Dicara's bedding."
"Fortunately, the round did not travel through a shared wall with Dicara's neighbors."

Dicara was charged, as he already had his Firearm Owners Identification Card revoked before this incident.

Dicara has also been charged with reckless use of a firearm.

Well, he succeeded at shooting something, people pointed out.

So good it might as well be a new sport.

Or a new term for an old issue.

Others used this incident to make a point about common rhetoric used by gun owner's organizations.

Or just pointing out that maybe not everyone should have one.

Some people found his whole story to be a little suspicious.

The punishment was the act itself, was it not?

Dicara will appear in court later this month.

The International Olympic Committee is still trying to figure out what their position on transgender inclusion looks like and how decisions are made regarding which events athletes compete in. In the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, Filipino boxer Hergie Bacyadan, a transgender man, had to compete in the women’s event because of their stage in their transition.

In the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics this year, per International Ski Federation regulations, Swedish moguls skier Elis Lundholm also has to compete in the women’s moguls event because he hasn't begun a masculinizing hormone replacement therapy regimen yet.
