Green Day Rips MAGA With Revised Lyrics To 'American Idiot' During NYE Show

During its New Year's Eve performance, Green Day unveiled a new version of 'American Idiot' that ripped the 'MAGA agenda.'

Pop punk band Green Day—no stranger to political statements—ripped into the MAGA movement with revised lyrics to their hit song "American Idiot" during a New Year's Eve performance Sunday night.

The band's lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong changed a line from the song—which originally criticized former President George W. Bush and the Iraq War—from “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda," to the cheers of the crowd.

The rock band had previously criticized former President Donald Trump at the American Music Awards in 2016 and in August, they reacted to Trump’s indictment by releasing limited edition merchandise that featured his mugshot—so this wasn't necessarily out of the ordinary for them at all.

You can see the performance in the video below.

The performance quickly triggered members of the MAGA movement, including Elon Musk himself.

Others loved the lyric change and were quick to praise the band for it.

In 2022, Green Day made headlines for a very blunt, expletive-laden message for Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz at one of their concerts.

During a performance in Berlin, Germany, the band—best known for songs like "Basket Case," "Longview," "When I Come Around" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"—performed in front of a sign that declared "F**K Ted Cruz."

Green Day's message to Cruz comes as the Texas Republican continues to face scathing criticism for his response to last month's mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

Cruz was swiftly rebuked after suggesting schools would be safer if there were fewer exits and if more armed officers were stationed inside school buildings.

19 children and two teachers died during the shooting and an increased police presence at the school had not deterred the shooter one bit–but that didn't stop Cruz from continuing to espouse conservative talking points about how militarizing more school officers could prevent further shootings.
