Horror fans watching The Goldbergs this Halloween season are in for quite a surprise. The series' official Twitter account has revealed that seasoned horror veteran Robert Englund will be reprising his iconic role as the dream demon, Freddy Krueger.
Cue the excited screams from the horror community.
The 71-year-old actor last portrayed the wise-cracking villain in 2003's Freddy vs. Jason.
The news is so exciting that it may even bring new viewers to The Goldbergs.
The reveal came in the form of a brief video with Englund and The Goldbergs star Wendi McLendon-Covey, who portrays Beverly Goldberg.
Series writer Aaron Kaczander followed the video up with a recreation of a classic promotional image from the original film's release.
This news comes after fans have long since come to terms with the fact that they'd never see an Englund's Freddy Krueger again. Englund will return for A Nightmare on Elk Avenue, this season's Halloween episode.
There's no confirmed air date, but the episode is said to revolve around Adam, portrayed by Sean Giambrone, and his reaction to the film.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly from August 2017, Englund confirmed he would never don the striped sweater again. According to the actor, portraying Freddy is too physically demanding. "If I do a fight scene now it's got to be real minimal because I can't snap my head for eight different takes and different angles," the actor said. "My spine gets sore."
The Goldbergs takes place during the 1980s and the first A Nightmare on Elm Street released on November 9, 1984.
Younger fans of Englund's character will get a glimpse into the audience reaction to what has become a campy horror hit.
