The internet was gobsmacked after former Republican President Donald Trump recently made the bizarre claim that Democrats and liberals actually wanted Roe v. Wade overturned, contrary to any version of objective reality.
A Newsmax clip making the rounds showed Trump barking at a recent rally on the subject of overturning the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 landmark decision, claiming:
"Everybody wanted this to be done."
He continued:
"Every legal scholar wanted this to be done. Most Democrats wanted it. Liberals wanted it."
To be clear, not everybody, as he proclaimed, was in favor of the conservative majority high court's contentious decision.
According to a Gallup poll, conducted between May 2-22 following the leaked copy of Justice Alito's draft of the majority opinion, 58% of Americans opposed having Roe v. Wade overturned.
Results also indicated that 58% of Republicans, 34% of Independents, and 15% of Democrats favored the reversal.
By contrast, 80% of Democrats, 62% of independents, and 31% of Republicans stated they did not want Roe v. Wade overturned.

Ultimately, SCOTUS' conservative majority's ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization led to the June 2022 overturning of the landmark ruling that once protected reproductive rights in the U.S. for nearly half a century. This was the result of a conservative yearslong campaign that was enabled by Donald Trump's stacked conservative Supreme Court.
Trump was promptly fact-checked for his erroneous rant.
Social media users continued sharing their thoughts on him going off the rails again.
Perhaps he dreamt up the alternate reality during one of his naps in the courtroom.
While he knows he can not run from the responsibility for having overturned the decision, he wants to convince people it was the popular thing to do. Voters should not be fooled this November.
