Independent 2024 hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has found himself in the spotlight once again, this time not for his anti-vaxxer views but for an unconventional choice of footwear—or rather, the lack thereof.

Conservative commentator Justin Haskins, who happened to be seated behind Kennedy in first class during a flight from Portland to Dallas, documented the incident on the In The Tank podcast, shared on YouTube.

Haskins, working for the climate-denial-focused Heartland Institute, explained that he was initially seeking a routine photo of Kennedy for an upcoming appearance on Glenn Beck's show. However, an impromptu opportunity presented itself when Kennedy walked to the bathroom without shoes or socks.

Haskins described the scene:

“RFK gets up and he goes to the bathroom and as he’s walking to the bathroom and I realize the guy has no shoes on and no socks."
"And the floor is covered with food and it’s like disgusting food. ... He goes into the restroom sockless and shoeless, something I’ve literally never seen in my entire life out of all the times I’ve been on planes." ...
"Absolutely disgusting, right? ... Think about all the urine that’s on the floor on this air bathroom.” ...
"So now we’ve ruined his entire presidential campaign. This man needs to be removed from the race immediately."

The incident grossed out social media users who criticized Kennedy's behavior in response.

Despite the flight faux pas, recent polls indicate that Kennedy's independent presidential campaign is gaining traction, reaching 22 percent, the highest for an independent or third-party candidate in a generation, as reported by CNN.

Kennedy Jr.—who abandoned his attempt to primary President Biden as a Democrat over the summer—is a noted conspiracy theorist who was once criticized because of his claim that chemicals in the water supply are turning kids transgender.

Kennedy Jr. has also openly discussed his anti-vaccine conspiracy theories; the combination of his unconventional beliefs and association with controversial figures like Peterson and InfoWars host Alex Jones has generated significant skepticism and scrutiny of his candidacy.
