'Fox and Friends' Host Just Made a Blatantly False Claim About Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Tax Proposal, and Yeah, She Doesn't Understand How Taxes Work

Nope.

Ainsley Earhardt of Fox and Friends claimed - erroneously - that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wants to tax 70 percent of your paycheck. That it happened during a segment about how Democrats don't understand economics is an extra bit of irony.

"How do they have so much support?" Earhardt asked New York Post Columnist Michael Goodwin.

"I frankly think American young people today are not being educated properly in schools," Goodwin said. "They don’t know the history of our country, they don’t know the history of other countries, they don’t understand economics."

Many found the ignorance shocking.

Ocasio-Cortez's idea, of course, is not to impose a 70% tax on paychecks. Rather, she's talking about higher taxes for income beyond a certain point.

"Once you get to the tippy-tops, on your $10 millionth dollar, sometimes you see tax rates as high as 60 percent or 70 percent," Ocasio-Cortez told Anderson Cooper in a recent 60 Minutes interview, "That doesn’t mean all $10 million dollars are taxed at an extremely high rate. But it means that as you climb up this ladder, you should be contributing more."

Conservatives have been trying to discredit Ocasio-Cortez and her marginal tax rate proposal, but Twitter's got her back.

Like those who would get taxed at 70% after their 10 millionth dollar, their argument was rich.
