John Legend made history on Sunday becoming the first African-American man to capture the elusive EGOT win— Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony. He was also only the second African-American to ever complete EGOT, with the first being Whoopi Goldberg, who achieved her EGOT status n 2002.
Legend scored his EGOT with an Emmy win as one of the producers of the televised version of Jesus Christ Superstar. He'd already won 10 Grammys. a Tony Award for producing Jitney and an Oscar for original song from 2014's Selma.
Joining Legend in the big win, also grabbing a EGOT in the process was his co-producers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.
Legend sent out the following message on Instagram
Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competitive categories. Sirs Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and I joined that group when we won an Emmy for our production of their legendary show Jesus Christ Superstar. So happy to be part of this team. So honored they trusted me to play Jesus Christ. So amazed to be in such rarefied air.
Only 15 people in entertainment history!
