Emma Watson Breaks Lengthy Social Media Silence To Address Rumors She's Retired From Acting

Actress Emma Watson has reappeared on social media after a lengthy absence to address rumors that she's decided to retire from acting.

She's laying rumors to rest for good.

In a series of tweets, Watson took the rumors head on, referencing media reports earlier this year and the retirement rumors they started.

In one of the tweets, seen below, Watson told her fans to trust one source and one source only for Emma Watson news—Emma Watson herself.

The retirement rumors began to swirl back in February, when the Daily Mail's Charlotte Griffiths reported Watson's agent saying the actress had gone "dormant." The Mail claimed the quote was "movie-speak for she's 'given up acting'."

And the reason Griffiths gave for the "dormancy" made the rumor swirl even harder.

"I can reveal the Harry Potter star, who has been famous since she was nine, has decided to step back from the limelight to spend time with rumoured fiance Leo Robinton, who she's been dating for 18 months."

Watson's manager quickly quashed the rumors, telling Entertainment Weekly it's merely Watson's social media accounts that are "dormant."

Now, Watson is speaking out for herself.

Though she did not name Griffiths or the Daily Mail in her tweets this week—her first since August 27, 2020—Watson made direct reference to both the retirement and the engagement rumors, calling both nothing but media gossip.

Watson chalked the rumors up to newspapers finding "ways to create clicks," then offered real insight into where she's been for the last nine months.

And it's likely to sound pretty familiar in these pandemic times.

Like most people, Watson has been simply hunkering down and staying safe, while "failing to make sourdough bread" along the way.

Stars—they're just like us!

On Twitter, fans were thrilled to hear from the reclusive star.

Watson's last film was Greta Gerwig's Oscar-nominated adaptation of Little Women in 2019.

Her next project is unknown, but she is rumored to be in talks to star in an upcoming Avengers film and a new Harry Potter installment.
