College Basketball Coach Says He's 'Deeply Sorry' For Telling Players To 'Stay On The Plantation'

College Basketball Coach Says He's 'Deeply Sorry' For Telling Players To 'Stay On The Plantation'

Creighton University basketball coach Greg McDermott is under fire after an off-color and extremely racist remark made to team players.

At the end of last month, McDermott, after a traveling loss, told his team that he needed everybody to "stay on the plantation."

"Guys, we got to stick together. We need both feet in. I need everybody to stay on the plantation. I can't have anybody leave the plantation."

McDermott posted an apology statement via his Twitter account to take accountability.

Creighton University did not necessarily let McDermott off the hook though.

"While an apology is a start, and while we believe this was out of character for coach McDermott, in no way does it diminish the fact that his remark was hurtful to many."

McDermott's assistant coach—Terrence Rencher, a Black man—said he was "deeply hurt" by McDermott's racist language, and was taken aback, though he noted the players seemed confident this was out of character for McDermott.

Creighton University has not made it clear whether or not McDermott has suffered internal consequences for his remarks, but it seems as though McDermott will be allowed to finish out the season.

The team will head into the Big East conference next week, with McDermott still at the helm.
