The Oscar winner threw his support behind actors Paul Dano, Matthew Lillard and Owen Wilson at AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards over the weekend after their acting skills were cruelly insulted by director Quentin Tarantino.

We all know someone who, once they achieve a little success, act like they are untouchable, as if they can say or do absolutely anything without consequence.

We've most certainly witnessed that dynamic in the entertainment industry, particularly among some big-name celebrities.

Quentin Tarantino is, without a doubt, one of them, slipping not-so-subtle digs at actors into many of his interviews. Recently, he's commented specifically on Paul Dano, Matthew Lillard, and Owen Wilson.

While guest-starring on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast in December 2025, Tarantino called There Will Be Blood and Little Miss Sunshine's Paul Dano "the weakest f**king actor in SAG (Screen Actors Guild)."

The Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood director also said he "can't stand" The Internship's and Loki's Owen Wilson, and he doesn't care for Scooby-Doo and Five Nights at Freddy's actor Matthew Lillard.

George Clooney, who's had an incredibly prolific acting career, was aware of Tarantino's comments and decided to speak up about it the next time he was on stage.

At the AARP's Movies for Grownups Awards this past weekend, Clooney stepped on stage to accept a "Best Actor" award and commented on the cruelty sometimes found in the industry.

Clooney said at the end of his speech:

"This award was made by people who love actors; that's an important part."
"People I've known most of my life, actually, most of them are actors. I have a great affinity for them, and I don't enjoy watching people be cruel."
"And I don't particularly enjoy watching people be cruel to actors."

Referencing his fellow actors specifically, but without mentioning Tarantino, Clooney added:

"By the way, Paul Dano and Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard, I would be honored to work with those actors."
"Honored."

The crowd erupted in applause. Rolling his eyes for a moment before continuing, Clooney pointed out:

"We live in a time of cruelty, and we do not need to be adding to it."

Clooney's response to Tarantino also caught the attention of the "entertainment" subReddit, where Redditors ran with the idea of Clooney, Wilson, Lillard, and Dano getting together for a movie as the ultimate Tarantino snub.

"Dano, Lillard, Wilson, and Clooney. That needs to be the cast for the next Coen Brothers film." - Low-Progress-2166

"Quite honestly, a Villeneuve, Nolan, Soderberg, or Cohen Bros (if they want to reunite) movie with Clooney, Lillard, Dano, and O. Wilson sounds like f**king FIRE to me."

"PTA or Wes Anderson, a little less so, but probably still great."

"I think that’s also a great cast for Edgar Wright, Guy Ritchie, or Rian Johnson."

"I’d also be extremely intrigued to see what Robert Eggers could do with that cast."

"I enjoy the films Tarantino makes. But I just don’t get where he’s coming from here." - elarobot

"This actually sounds like a pretty fun movie if they had the right script and tone. Most of the people mentioned would be a lighter tone than Dano, but I'm sure he would be fine with it. Bonus would be if they maybe gave one of Tarantino's collaborators as the villain role, kind of as a tip of the hat." - FlukyS

"Okay, George, you have to put your money where your mouth is, because George Clooney and Matthew Lillard is something I never knew I wanted, but I need it now." - spiritualpudge

"Any excuse to see more of Wilson and Lillard." - Valentinee105

"Honestly, a movie with the four of them would probably be pretty f**king sweet." - CoolestNebraskanEver

Matthew Lillard came forward and admitted that he was aware of Tarantino's comments, saying that such commentary "hurts your feelings" and that it "f**king sucks" that a prominent figure like Tarantino is using his platform to tear down smaller actors.

Clooney is absolutely right that the world is not in its best place right now, and the last thing we need to do is be cruel to each other.
