Former President Bill Clinton criticized Congress for failing to push back against President Donald Trump's Rose Garden renovation, comparing it to the style of the late pianist and performer Liberace, who was known for gaudy gold costumes and flashy choreography.
The Oval Office has also been significantly revamped since Trump took office in January 2025. It features, among other things, a fireplace adorned with gold cherubs and medallions, surrounded by portraits of American statesmen in ornate gold frames and shelves filled with gilded figurines, urns, and freshly-installed Rococo mirrors.
Earlier this year, Trump debuted a new cursive sign for the White House Rose Garden that tells you where you are in unabashedly gaudy script.
The new sign is off-center and can be seen on the awning above the Presidential "Walk of Fame" that features insulting plaques installed beneath the portraits of former Democratic presidents.
That's part of Trump's signature style—not that Clinton's a fan of any sort.
Clinton said the following while also criticizing Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds, who is running against Democratic candidate David Jolly:
“I think Congress made a mistake not protesting turning the Rose Garden into what looks like the entrance to Liberace’s bathroom."
You can hear what he said in the video below.
The Trump administration has previously come under fire for its changes to the White House's overall aesthetic, often done to the point of, critics say, disrespecting historical significance.
In 2021, then-former First Lady Melania Trump lashed out at Michael Beschloss, a prominent historian, after he criticized her sense of style while noting that a year had passed since her controversial renovation of the White House Rose Garden, which had been established by First Lady Ellen Wilson, wife of President Woodrow Wilson.
The renovation involved clearing nearly all of the garden’s existing plants, trees, and flowers, tearing out an outdated irrigation system to install a modern one, upgrading the audio/visual setup, adding new paver walkways, and replanting nearly everything from the ground up.
Many concurred with Clinton's remark.
Clinton's remarks came as former President Barack Obama attracted attention for comparing Trump's White House renovations to the Cheesecake Factory at a rally on Saturday.
Several conservative figures pushed back after Obama said Trump "got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory" after remarking that Trump "seems very focused on home renovations."
Obama at one point commented "What's up with the gold?" and we wouldn't be surprised if he also had Liberace in mind as he said it.
