After a months-long smear campaign against the integrity of American elections, former President Donald Trump left the White House for the last time on the morning of January 20th, hours before President Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

With Trump permanently banned from Twitter—his preferred outlet for firing off-the-cuff insults and outright lies—the former President has kept a relatively low profile.

But on Monday, Trump's team announced in an official letter that it had founded the "Office of the Former President," writing that the office would be in charge of releasing statements on behalf of Trump in the future.

The development was issued on a letterhead reading "The Office of Donald J. Trump."

The statement read in part:

"Today, the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, formally opened the Office of the Former President."

It was issued as the House of Representatives delivered to the Senate its article of impeachment against Trump for inciting an insurrection with his election lies, which led to the deadly siege on the United States Capitol earlier this month.

The statement concluded:

"President Trump will always and forever be a champion of the American people."

While Trump's supporters were undoubtedly happy to see a statement from the former President, his critics were less than amused and began offering suggestions on how to make the letter more truthful.

Many dismissed the effort as the Trump sphere's latest way to coax donations from his supporters.

The Senate trial of the former President is expected to take place this week.
