James Corden Applauded For His Emotional Response To Bill Maher's Call To Bring Back Fat Shaming
Real Time with Bill Maher/HBO; The Late Late Show With James Corden/CBS

Bill Maher made his career on being as shocking as possible with rants about social issues.

But one of his latest rants drew a quick response from late night talk show host James Corden.

On his HBO program Real Time with Bill Maher, the comedian extolled the virtues of mocking and shaming people.

Corden disagreed with Maher's views on the merits of belittling others.

Corden stated:

"If making fun of fat people made them lose weight, there'd be no fat kids in schools. And I'd have a six-pack right now."

Maher had claimed that fat-shaming had disappeared and it needed to come back, for the children and public health.

But Corden disagreed.

"Fat-shaming never went anywhere. Ask literally any fat person, we are reminded of it all the time."
"There's a common and insulting misconception that fat people are stupid and lazy and we're not. We get it, we know. We know that being overweight isn't good for us and I've struggled my entire life trying to manage my weight and I suck at it."

Corden added:

"We're not all as lucky as Bill Maher, you know, we don't all have a sense of superiority that burns 35,000 calories a day."

Corden concluded by saying...

"Let's be honest, fat-shaming is just bullying. And bullying just makes the problem worse."

...and by saving his last remark for Maher:

"While you're encouraging people to think about what goes into their mouths, just think a little harder about what comes out of yours."
